September Advisor Spotlight

Chris Lundy

Department: Aerospace Engineering

Title: Academic Advising Manager

Hometown: Rome, GA

Alma Mater: Georgia Highlands College (AS), Jacksonville State University (BA), Georgia Southern University (M.Ed), University of Georgia (currently working on an Ed.D)

Degree(s): See Above

Favorite activity/hobby: Watching Sports (NY Giants, St. Louis Cardinals fan!), re-watching Star Wars and Marvel movies, and DC Movies/TV Shows

What is the best part of your job? The students! It’s such an honor to watch these students grow and to be a part of that in any capacity is special. I’m so grateful.

Where is your favorite place on campus? The Student Center because I like to eat 😊 I really like our AE labs. Seeing our students go into these spaces and work like it’s second nature is something to behold. And I’m in walking distance to Tech Tower. Seeing the “TECH” sign at the top of that building reminds me everyday how blessed I am to work here and serve our students.

Unique/exciting thing you bring to Georgia Tech? I don’t know if I bring anything special to GT, but revamping our prospective student visits has been a treat. We see over 1,000 prospective students in an academic year!

Anything else that you would like for the GTAAN community to know about you and/or your role at Tech? I’m not me without my team. I’m so grateful to Chirag Patel, Kay Doering-Ware, and Xavier Cammon.

Thanks for letting us shine the spotlight on you this month, Chris!

Updates on the GA Legislative Requirement

GLR Meeting

Thursday, September 28th at 11:00 AM via Zoom

The Canvas modules and examinations for the Georgia Legislative Requirements will be rolling out the week of September 4th. Advisors will be receiving a detailed email on August 30 or 31 with information to prepare them, should students have any questions.

In addition, we will be hosting another GLR information session via Zoom on Thursday, September 28th at 11:00 AM. We urge all advisors who have questions or concerns, or perhaps just need to "brush up" on their information about the GLRs, to attend this meeting. The direct link is https://gatech.zoom.us/j/95921503008.

In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email Amy D'Unger or Matt Hild. Students should direct their questions to Dr. Hild via the question form on the GLR website. Thank you!

GA Legislative Requirements Highlights & FAQs

There seems to be some confusion about the GLR requirements for students, so we've developed a GLR Highlights & FAQ to hopefully clarify things. You can also access the GA Legislative Requirements Module via the GTAAN Canvas Site. Please send questions to Amy D'Unger ([email protected]).

GLR Highlights & FAQs

Updated on May 1, 2023.

Updates on the Georgia Legislative Requirements

On March 31, 2023, the Office of Undergraduate Education and Office of the Registrar announced a revision to the implementation of the plan for completion of the Georgia Legislative Requirements (U.S. history, U.S. Constitution, GA history, GA Constitution).

The new implementation extends the "four-for-one" plan that has been in place since 1995 through April 30, 2023. This means that all students who first matriculated any semester before summer 2023 can fulfill all four GLR requirements with one of the following classes: HIST 2111, HIST 2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUBP 3000. This class also fulfills three of the 12 required hours for Core Area E.  This policy is based on MATRICULATION YEAR, so any student who matriculates before summer 2023 needs only one of the five classes to complete all four GLRs, even if they haven't taken any of the classes yet (i.e., the policy will not apply retroactively to any students matriculating before summer 2023).

Beginning May 1, 2023, students can complete the four required Georgia Legislative Requirements in a variety of ways, through combinations of AP/IB/dual enrollment/transfer credit, coursework at Georgia Tech, and/or examination through a non-credit, non-tuition bearing Canvas course. The most notable change in the revised implementation is that HIST 2111 and HIST 2112 taken at Georgia Tech will now fulfill both the U.S. history and GA history GLR, while INTA 1200, POL 1101, and PUBP 3000 will now fulfill both the U.S. Constitution and GA Constitution GLR. It should also be noted that the requirements for Core Area E remain the same: all students MUST earn credit for HIST 2111, HIST 2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUBP 3000.

Canvas courses with the learning modules and examinations will be rolled out in late August or early September. Moving forward, all students will be added to the appropriate GLR Canvas exam sites early in their second semester on campus. For the students matriculating in summer 2023 (the first students to need access to the exams), this means early in the fall 2023 semester.

There are a variety of resources to assist advisors and students in learning more about the Georgia Legislative Requirements and we encourage you to include this information in your FASET orientation materials.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you find a student who matriculated before summer 2023 who is missing GLR credit, please reach out to Amy D'Unger at [email protected]

College & Departmental Updates

Fall 2023 Commencement Changes

A direct result of growing enrollment is higher attendance at Commencement, leading to longer ceremonies to individually acknowledge all attending graduates. To avoid excessive ceremony lengths, Georgia Tech will host four Commencement ceremonies this fall.

Previous fall commencements experienced unfavorable weather conditions. Dividing the graduating class into four smaller ceremonies allows the event to fit inside McCamish Pavilion with five tickets per graduate for bachelor’s and master’s students. Ph.D. graduates will receive 10 guest tickets. The Fall 2023 ceremonies will take place inside McCamish Pavilion.

Fall 2023 Ceremony Schedule

Request for Proposals for Global Student Experiences and Partnerships (RFP-GSEP)

Connect Globally is one of the six focus areas of the 2020-2030 Institute Strategic Plan (ISP). The GSEP Implementation Team recognize that the number of programs that integrate global experiences into undergraduate or graduate curricula offered to GT undergraduate and graduate students must expand in order to meet the Connect Globally goals. Integrating global learning and/or experience into our students’ formal education can take many forms, such as: Starting a new program abroad (e.g., exchange program, internship program, faculty-led study abroad program, etc.) or expanding an existing program OR redesigning existing offering to integrate global themes and content into classes, student research, service, Vertically Integrated Projects, Capstones, Studios, and other activities that are part of the formal education of our students. The GSEP Implementation Team seeks to lower those barriers by providing funds for:

  • faculty buy-outs to develop new classes, to integrate international/global/intercultural perspectives into classes to be taught abroad, and/or to develop new on-campus programs and programs abroad
  • faculty to support co-taught interdisciplinary offerings, such as capstones, studios, VIPs and other related curricular activities
  • graduate students to support faculty with the research needed for course and program development

Please complete the RFP to propose a new global initiative by October 10, 2023.

See the linked PDF file for more information.
