Lifelong Tillicum resident Jonathan Jackson knows firsthand how some Pierce County communities struggle to obtain good schools, roads, even sidewalks. That's what prompted him to join the You Count Campaign, a collective of Pierce County organizations that recognize the importance of a complete and accurate census count for the well-being of our community - in 2020 and beyond.

As executive director of Palmer Scholars, which mentors high school and college scholars, Jackson wants to engage students in the census outreach effort, in collaboration with other local groups.

He plans to apply for a census outreach grant from Greater Tacoma Community Foundation (GTCF) to support the Palmer Scholars' effort.

PHOTO: Students ride the bus home from the Dragon's Club after school ELO program at DeLong Elementary

When the bell rings at the end of the day at Tacoma Public School's DeLong Elementary, some students head home with their parents, some get on the bus, and some of them go to Dragon's Club.

Dragon's Club is an after-school program that provides Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELO) like dance, art, and mentorship. Located in the DeLong cafeteria, students just walk down the hall to get to the Dragon's Club

Providing free programs at school sites helps maximize the number of students who can participate in Expanded Learning Opportunities, but there are still challenges that need to be overcome in order to make it happen
