New Stories
This week, we offer a select few stories from the Fall 2021 Georgetown Health magazine. The new magazine is focused on children’s health, and how Georgetown is involved at multiple intersections within the field. From racial and socioeconomic health disparities to advocating for children’s health coverage, from neuroscience research on language development to pediatric oncology, the university offers a range of expertise and insight.
Evidence suggests that the pandemic has exacerbated a concerning trend: over the past several decades, the United States has seen a steady increase in the incidence of mental health issues among children.
At Georgetown Lombardi, the concept of cura personalis, “care of the whole person,” is central to the patient experience for both children and adults. While the goal of treatment is physical healing, each child’s need for emotional and spiritual comfort also is paramount throughout the cancer journey.
Throughout the pandemic, three Georgetown University graduates - Susan Kiley Eckert (NHS’78), Eileen Brennan Ferrell (NHS’75, G’83) and Claire Piccirillo (G’00) - have worked together as leaders in the MedStar Health system to address challenges facing the nursing workforce.
GU Public Health Updates
Georgetown community members who will be on campus after the Thanksgiving break will need to get tested for COVID-19 upon their return to campus, regardless of whether they have traveled or remained in the local area. Non-residential students, faculty and staff need to test within 5 days of their return to campus. Schedule your free test on campus via the One Medical mobile app or website.
Although D.C. has eased its indoor masking mandate, Georgetown’s indoor mask requirement will remain effective at least through the end of the fall 2021 semester. All individuals, regardless of vaccination status, are required to wear masks indoors in university-owned or -operated buildings except when eating or drinking, when alone in a private office, or when in a personal residence.
News and Announcements
Brian Floyd, assistant dean of student academic affairs at the School of Nursing & Health Studies, was selected to serve among the first-ever group of Benjamin A. Gilman International Program Advisor Ambassadors.
As of November 23, all staff and AAP employees, including part-time and temporary employees, are provided 88 hours (equal to 11 full time working days) of COVID-19 vaccination paid time off (PTO). COVID vaccination PTO is only to be used if an employee cannot work, either on campus or remotely, during their scheduled work hours because of vaccination appointments (including boosters) for the employee or employee’s minor child, or vaccination recovery for the employee or employee’s minor child.
As an expression of deep appreciation for all that our faculty and staff have contributed, we will be adding a holiday to our calendar on December 23, in addition to our existing holiday break from December 24 through January 3, 2022. For more details regarding this additional day off, please refer to the Human Resources website.
Every year, the Department of Human Resources coordinates the Sponsor-A-Family program to offer assistance to those Georgetown families in need during the holiday season. The deadline to nominate a family is November 19; the deadline to apply to be a sponsor is December 1. Learn more about the program and how to get involved on the HR website.
All GUMC faculty members are invited to participate in a virtual focus group to share thoughts on faculty wellness. After the focus groups conclude, the Faculty Wellness Task Force will provide recommendations on enhancing faculty wellness to GUMC's executive vice president. The next focus group will meet on December 2, 12:00 - 12:45 p.m. To participate, complete this form. Email Karen Walters if you have questions.
In partnership with the Philodemic Society, Georgetown is engaging in a process to re-imagine the Philodemic Room in Healy Hall following research and the presentation of a report by the Philodemic Society’s Committee for Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation.
Current Philodemic Society students and members of the design team from SmithGroup, the architecture and design partner for this project, will discuss the room’s architectural history and the current process to create a new design that honors our community’s values and contributes to acknowledgement and truth-telling about our University’s history. RSVP to receive the Zoom link for a virtual community forum on December 2, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
