Superintendent

Gilroy Unified School District

Dear Gilroy Community Members and GUSD Supporters,

In the past months, the Board of Education and District have reaffirmed our commitment to serving all students and families, regardless of their immigration status.

By law, all children in the United States have the right to a free and appropriate public education (Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982), regardless of immigration or citizenship status, and every student in California has the right to attend public school free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation and bullying.

We firmly believe that every child deserves access to a high-quality education as a pathway to success and positive outcomes. All children, without exception, should have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive without fear or stress.

Resources and support is available on the GUSD website: gilroyunified.org/families/immigration-resources.

In last month's community newsletter, at the January 16 regular meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution in support of our students and our intention to abide by the laws set in place to protect students while they are in our care. Resolution #24/25-18 (English/ Spanish) ensures that all students in the Gilroy Unified School District will be provided a safe environment where they can receive a positive educational experience.

The Family Educational and Privacy Act (FERPA) prevents the District from disclosing or distributing student information with any outside agency without written permission from parents/guardians. Additionally, in accordance with AB 699, the District does not collect or maintain records related to students’ or family members’ citizenship or immigration status during the enrollment process. Furthermore, Board Policy 0141 prohibits unlawful discrimination based on actual or perceived race, color, ancestry, nationality, national origin or immigration status.

As we move through the second half of the school year, our commitment to providing high-quality educational experiences for all students remains steadfast. We continue to focus on creating engaging, challenging, and meaningful learning opportunities in safe environments for every child in our district.

Sincerely,

Anisha Munshi, Ed.D.

Welcome K9 Maui

Aloha, Gilroy! Please welcome K9 Maui, the Gilroy Police Department's working therapy dog, who will be a constant presence on GUSD campuses.

Named after the beloved Moana character voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Maui was adopted from the San Martin Animal Shelter as part of a Leadership Gilroy project to bring a working therapy dog to the Gilroy community. Maui, whose training and certification were provided by Operation Freedom Paws, is an 11-month-old Border Collie/ Australian Sheppard mix.

Maui lives with his partner, School Resource Officer, Dustin Odell, and his family, and he will be a consistent presence on GUSD campuses, providing essential assistance to students and staff experiencing stressful situations. To learn more about Maui, read the Gilroy Police Department Facebook post.

Congratulations Gretchen Yoder-Schrock

Congratulations to Christopher High School Activities Director, Gretchen Yoder-Schrock, who has been named a 2025 Asset Champion Adult Role Model, by YMCA of Silicon Valley. The Adult Role Model award recognizes an adult who models and inspires positive responsible behavior for young people.

Asset Champions are individuals or organizations that make extraordinary efforts to build Developmental Assets, create positive connections with young people, and inspire others to do the same.

Gretchen certainly embodies all of these qualities, and more, in her role at CHS. She will be honored at the 2025 Project Cornerstone Asset Champions Awards Breakfast on March 21 with the other honorees. Congratulations Gretchen! We are proud of you!
