Gilroy Unified School District

Dear Gilroy Community Members and GUSD Supporters,

I hope this message finds you well and that your family is enjoying the warmer weather as we begin to welcome Spring. This time of year always brings a sense of fresh beginnings and growth. As I walk through our classrooms and witness our students engaged in learning, I am filled with hope and joy, envisioning all the possibilities that lie ahead for them. The energy and enthusiasm of our students inspires me daily, and reaffirms our shared mission of supporting their growth, academically and personally.

We believe that every child deserves a learning environment free from distractions, fear, bullying and intimidation. We embrace the diversity of our students and families and the rich language and cultural assets that they bring to our District.

We understand that many of our families are currently facing significant challenges and are concerned for the safety of their loved ones, particularly those who are undocumented. I want to take a moment to reaffirm that all children in the United States have the right to a free and appropriate public education, regardless of immigration status (Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982)). Additionally, every student in California has the right to attend public school free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying, as outlined in the Educational Code (EC 220, 234).

To ensure that we uphold these protections, the District has the following practices in place to support our families and students:

  • No outside agency, including immigration-enforcement officers, is allowed access to the school or children unless required by law. This typically requires a signed court order or subpoena.
  • School officials will not share confidential information, including immigration or citizenship status, unless required by a signed court order or subpoena, as protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • If a student is meeting with an agency for specific services, written permission from the parent or guardian is required. This includes meeting with mental health professionals and other resource providers.

We remain fully committed to providing space where every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential, surrounded by safety, support, and respect.

Thank you for being a part of our wonderful community,

Anisha Munshi, Ed.D.
