WHAT IS GREAT VALLEY CREW??

WHO WE ARE: We are a competitive rowing team, comprised of male and female athletes in grades 7-12. Public, private, and homeschooled students are all eligible. Crew is a non-contact sport that requires intense physical training and competition. No experience is necessary.

REQUIREMENTS: Hard work, determination, and the ability to work, row, and win as a team!

VISION: Great Valley Crew Team strives to not only develop young adults in the sport of rowing, but to build character through the challenges of victory and defeat; to promote community through the responsibility of teamwork and sportsmanship; and to achieve personal excellence through the values of dedication, determination and hard work.

QUESTIONS ABOUT GV CREW: Email crew.admin@gvco.org for more info.

Rowers with Coach Emily at the Stotesbury Regatta

Important Dates

Tuesday, August 20 - First Practice!

All returning rowers are expected to register by August 20.

During the first two weeks, practices are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 3:45-6:15pm.

Realizing that some may be on vacation during this period, practices between 8/20 - 8/29 are designed to get our experienced boats ready for early regattas. If you are not away, then you are expected to attend practices during this period.

Monday, September 9 - Fall practice schedule begins

Saturday, September 7 - OPEN HOUSE (tentative date)

This is a great opportunity for anyone NEW to the sport to try it out before registration ends.

Monday, September 9 - Registration CLOSES

Practices

Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays 3:45-6:15pm

Saturdays 10:00am-1:00pm

Please plan to attend all practices unless you are not feeling well. If you know you will need to miss a practice for another commitment, please let the coaches know as soon as you can.

Keep an eye on the weather. Yes, we row if it's just raining. Weather that keeps us off the water would be lightning/thunder, windy conditions, rough or high water, and debris in the water.

As the weather gets cooler, dress in layers. Snug fitting clothing is better as long shirts that are not tucked in and loose fitting shorts/pants could get caught in the seat. Extra pairs of dry socks are always good to pack as well as a reusable water bottle, towels, and healthy snacks.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a competitive rowing team, and we need your full commitment to all practices and regattas. We need the whole team at every practice to ensure we can get on the water every day the weather conditions allow. One rower missing practice means an entire boat must stay on-land.

Boathouse Directions

Great Valley Crew launches from the John S. Trinsey Jr. Memorial Boathouse which is part of the Upper Merion Boat House Park. The boathouse is located on the Schuylkill River in Bridgeport, just past Frosty Falls Ice Cream.

**Currently rowers are responsible for getting themselves to and from practice. Carpools are organized to help. Updated transportation info coming soon**

Fall 2024 Regattas

The following are the dates for fall regattas. Regattas may be added or cancelled depending on a number of factors. Please, mark them in your calendars and try to work around them as much as possible. If you need to miss a regatta, please let the coaches know as soon as possible. We will also start a new availability calendar this Fall so please fill that out when we have that ready to go.

(if we get in)

10/27 Head of the Schuylkill - Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, PA

Volunteer Needs

As you may know, we need "all hands on deck" to keep GV Crew "afloat".

All puns aside, please consider where you may be able to help. Below is a list of volunteer needs. Though the bigger roles are filled (for now), we will still need all families to contribute in one way or another.

Program Director: Jay Cavalcanto

The program director works closely with the coaches and the GV Crew Board of Directors to see that everything runs smoothly for GV Crew.

Marketing/Communications: Kerry Cavalcanto

Sends newsletters and oversees social media and REMIND text messages.

Secretary: Vacant

Takes meeting minutes to communicate with the team.

Treasurer/Uniforms/Spiritwear: Dorothy Bickell (with a graduating Senior this year, it would be great to have someone shadow Dorothy)

Keeps track of income and expenses and reports back to program director and GVCO. Also orders/sells uniforms and spiritwear.

Hospitality Coordinator: Vacant

Coordinates refreshments and hospitality tent for regattas. Also, helps plan other team events like start-of-season/end-of-season picnics.

**No hospitality coordinator means no chuckwagon at regattas**

Carpool Coordinator: Vacant

Helps to connect families to carpool to and from practices.

Fundraising: More help needed

Oversees several fundraisers for the team.

Yard Sign Fundraiser: Jacqueline Moore

Need to miss a practice?

If you have to miss a practice for illness or unavoidable previous commitment, please text the coaches through REMIND.

Get Text Updates with REMIND

REMIND is the #1 way to stay on top of what is going on

in GV Crew.

Besides reminders for certain events, this texting service is used by the coaches to give updates if a practice needs to be changed or cancelled on short notice.
