A message from the Principal and a photo of Stacy Bush

Dear GVA-DC Families,

Happy New Year! 🎉

We hope you enjoyed a restful and joyful break with family and loved ones. We are excited to welcome students back and look forward to a wonderful start to the second half of the school year together.

Construction & Temporary Traffic Update

If you have passed by the school over the past few weeks, you may have noticed a lot of dirt and activity. Multiple trenches are currently being dug for water and sewer lines, both in front of and behind the school. At this time, the trench across the lane directly in front of the school will not be fully closed before tomorrow.

To ensure student and staff safety while maintaining school operations, we will be implementing a temporary revised traffic pattern.

Temporary Traffic Plan (Drop-Off & Pick-Up)

Traffic will be rerouted to avoid the trench area (see diagram below).

  • The existing queuing lanes will remain, but they will merge and enter the parking lot from the opposite direction, temporarily reversing the one-way traffic flow (shown by green lines).
  • Once inside the lot, traffic will operate with:
  • One lane for student drop-off/pick-up
  • One lane for passing and exiting
  • This configuration mirrors our current front-of-school drop-off system and allows traffic to continue moving safely.

To support this plan:

  • Cones will be placed (shown by the orange line on the diagram) to ensure all incoming traffic is directed into the drop-off lanes.
  • If handicap-accessible parking is needed, families will be directed to:
  • Use the east entrance by Door A
  • Park along the east side of the building
  • Loop around to exit safely (blue line)

Parking Reminders

There continues to be no on-campus parking available for parents at this time.

Please continue to use the parking lots across the street and follow all posted signage and staff directions to help keep traffic flowing safely.

Looking Ahead

Once the work in front of the school is completed next week, we do not anticipate any additional construction in front of the building that would impact daily operations.

As we move through this phase, we kindly ask families to allow extra time for drop-off and pick-up, as traffic may move more slowly than usual.

Please note that this is a fluid situation, and we are working closely with our contractors to monitor progress daily. Continue to check your email for updates.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and continued partnership.

Winter Reminders

As we navigate the winter months, please keep the following in mind:

Plan for Early Departures:

  • Roads can be icy and traffic unpredictable. Please leave early to ensure an on-time arrival.
  • Classroom instruction begins promptly at 8:00 am, and every minute late is lost learning time.

Pick-Up:

  • Parents will not have access to campus until 3:20 p.m., as the drop-off lanes will be used as part of the temporary play area.
  • To help control the volume of cars on campus and minimize delays, we will continue to follow a staggered pick-up schedule:
  • A–L: 3:30–3:45 p.m.
  • M–Z: 3:45–4:00 p.m.
  • Students attending tutoring can be picked up at 4:00 p.m.

Dressing for the Cold:

  • Please ensure students come prepared with coats, hats, gloves, and boots.
  • Label all items with your child’s full name.
  • On snowy days, please also send tennis shoes for indoor use.
  • Weather permitting, we will continue outdoor recess.

Uniform & Dress Code Reminder:

  • Students should wear navy blue, khaki, or black bottoms, a uniform top, and tennis shoes daily.
  • Any sweatshirts/sweaters worn indoors must be solid color with a GVA logo.

Updates from our SPED Department

In addition to strengthening our team with specialized service providers, we are pleased to welcome Claire Kelly, Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, who will be working under the supervision of Tiffany Barker, Speech-Language Pathologist, to support students’ communication and language development.

We are also excited to welcome a student teacher who will be working closely with our Special Education Team:

Hello! My name is Mary Huber, and I am so excited to begin my student teaching this semester! My husband and I have two daughters in the French Village, and I have been in the building this year as both a guest teacher and a PIC representative. I love GVA and am so thankful for the opportunity to learn from our amazing teachers. Before taking time off to be home with my children, I taught middle school English and special education. I am thrilled to be back in the classroom as I pursue my graduate degree and licensure in Early Childhood Special Education. It is a privilege to work with your children, and I look forward to our time together.

Together, these additions allow us to continue providing high-quality, student-centered support and services to meet the diverse needs of our learners.

We are excited about the second half of the school year and grateful for your continued partnership as we create a safe, supportive, and enriching learning environment for your children.

Warm regards,

Stacy Bush

Earn Cash Back for GVA-DC

Effortless fundraising is a way we raise money for GVA and for PIC without having to sell anything! We do this by asking our school families to save items that they already have in their homes, use cards at stores where they already shop, or shop through our online links. It’s a small act that can make a huge difference!
