It was the opening of the GVBL regular season and there were a full slate of games at the PAC Center throughout the weekend.
Boys 1st/2nd Division
Cardinals vs Panthers Andrew Shaughnessy caught fire and put the Cards up early. Evan Ferguson and Logan Whittaker kept the Panthers close, however the Cardinals were too deep as lefty Zach Charlier hit a couple of key shots down the stretch to seal it for the Cards.
Huskies vs Hoyas
In the second game of the day the Huskies were just too much for the Hoyas. The Huskies balanced attack held off the Hoyas the entire game. Some great hustle by Hudson Edington and Wesley Schutjer kept the Hoyas in striking distance but Jackson Luzak and crew were too much to handle.
Pirates vs Friars
The 10:45 game featured two pretty evenly matched teams. Olliver Billman got things heated up for the Friars in the early going but the Pirates fought back behind some strong play by Mark Crawford and Bennett Spangler.
Bearcats vs Storm
In the final game of the day two well coached teams squared off for a battle to finish the quadruple header. Two of the divisions top big men Weston Healey and Jace Thompson battled throughout. Scrappy play on both sides, particularly Gaige Sacchetta and Wesley Cole made a tight game to the finish.
Girls 1st/2nd Division
The Girls 1st/2nd grade division got off to a great start with a full set of divisional games both weekends to kick off the season. With many of the girls playing for the first time, they all showed amazing progress from the first week to the 2nd. There will be another set of games this Sunday afternoon pitting the Owls vs the Explorers and the Rams vs the Hawks in the second game.
Boys 3rd/4th Division
In the Boys 3rd/4th division, the Hoosiers and the Terps have started hot, each with a 2-0 record. There were a couple of lopsided games to start the season as teams were getting organized. This past weekend however we saw a couple of 5 point games as the Wolverines snuck by the Buckeyes and the Hawkeyes won a defensive battle versus the Lions. The Boys 3rd/4th division takes a break for the Thanksgiving holidays, but will have a full set of games immediately following the break.
Girls 3rd/4th Division
After the 1st week of action in the Girls 3rd/4th grade division, the Bulldogs have jumped out to 2-0, including a down-to-wire nail biter versus the Gators on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats are also undefeated with a much anticipated game against the Gators slated for this Saturday afternoon.
Boys 5th/6th Division
In the Boys 5th/6th division, the Celtics have started fast with a 2-0 record after beating the Knicks and just squeaking past the Pistons in a defensive battle. There are 4 teams without a loss at this point, with the Bulls, Hornets and Magic each 1-0. This coming weekends game of the week has the Hornets and Magic matched up. Full standings on the GVBL App!
Girls 5th/6th Division
The Sky has jumped out into the early divisional lead in the Girls 5th/6th grade division at 2-0. They have already shown that they are a very stingy team, allowing their opponents to average just 14 ppg thus far. On Friday night the Liberty just got by the Mystics in a tough battle but suffered their first setback on Sunday afternoon when the Fever beat them 22-16. This put the Liberty and Fever in a tie for second place in the division. Look for the Sky and the Mystics to match up in a key game this coming Friday night.
Boys 7th/8th Division
After this past weeks of games in the boys 7th/8th grade division, the Rockets and the Warriors are currently the teams to beat, sitting on top of the standings, each at 2-0. In the opening weekend of the season, 4 games were closely contested, with 3 out of 4 games decided by single digits. And nothing changed this week as all the games were tight contests. Tuesday saw two close games between Rockets (36) vs Spurs (29) and the Warriors (43) vs the Thunder (38). The entire division is back in action this weekend.
