Players, coaches, referees and families: thank you so much.
Congratulations to the champion teams below and we hope to see you again in GVBL Summer League.
| | Boys 7th/8th Champions: Kings | | The Kings and the Warriors clashed for a fifth time on Wednesday night for a “winner take all” game. Even though the Warriors were able to eke out a win against the undefeated Kings on Tuesday, the Kings quickly recovered in Wednesday’s rematch to defeat the Warriors in an undeniable 43-35 victory. In a matchup featuring several likely future NBA All-Stars on both teams, the game incredibly was competitive throughout. The players on both teams contributed to a very intense game. Ultimately, led by the Gustafson boys, Dylan and Will, the Kings prevailed 43-35 capping off a terrific season! | | Boys 3rd/4th Champions: Hoosiers | |
Wednesday night saw a thriller and instant classic of a basketball game between the Wolverines and the Hoosiers. The teams faced off after the Wolverines came away with a victory in the first edition of the championship game behind crafty passing, excellent teamwork, and nonstop hustle forcing a rematch in the double elimination tournament. In front of a packed gym, the teams battled at both ends of the court. They were diving for loose balls, scrapping for every rebound, and displaying all of the skills that they developed over the course of the whole season. The game was tied going into the last five minutes and lock down defense allowed only one point between both teams, a clutch free throw from Justin Hart to put the Hoosiers ahead. The Hoosiers saved their best defensive performance of the season for last and stood up to the tall task of slowing down the Wolverine's offense. The whole team came together to get stops, blocks, steals, and rebounds to go along with the scoring of Justin Hart, Jaden Hart, Michael Heim, and Griffin Nagy. The Hoosiers would like to thank their parents for their support during the season as well as the volunteer referees who came out for the Championship.
| | Boys 5th/6th Champions: Heat | |
In front of a roaring crowd, the 5/6 Championship between the Cavs and the Heat started fast as the Cavs ran to a 7-0 lead. The Heat relentlessly drove to the hoop only to find Cavs’ big man Alex Stanco blocking shots and turning away all would-be scorers. On the other end of the court, the Cavs would be stifled the rest of the half by the Heat’s tenacious defense. After a tough physical first half the teams took their breaks with a 10-9 score. Led up front by the fleet footed Wes Cole, an intense Heat defense put it all together in their final game - reminding some fans of the Eagles’ defense in the Super Bowl a few weeks ago.
Heat star scorer Saad Nachani hit back-to-back threes to give the Heat the momentum early in the 2nd half. Heavy on the ball pressure by Luke Oberholtzer produced steal after steal as the Cavs couldn’t find space to operate their set offense, and the Heat stretched out to a double digit lead. As the Cavs Ethan Dewees and Liam Vogt tried to spark a comeback the Heat’s JJ Ricci stood tall and in the way. The Heat showed off their depth, and strong team defense was played by all, as Duke and speedster James hustled after loose balls and sticky defense was played by Marvin and Jack. A key offensive rebound gave the Heat an extra look and Charlie made it count when his long heave added 3 more to the score and what would prove to be an insurmountable lead. Final score Heat 34, Cavs 19.
| | Girls 3rd/4th Grade Champions: Bulldogs | | In Girls 3rd/4th, the Bulldogs had an exciting win against the Tigers in the championship to take the win! They finished the game with a score of 27-16 and upset the top seed as the second seed. Congrats Bulldogs! | | Girls 5th/6th Champions : Dream | | It was the Dream versus the Sky in the girls 5/6 showdown. The Sky team came to the Championship game with an impressive record, but the Dream team battled through their season and playoffs, and ultimately lived up to their name. The Dream maintained a lead at the half with a solid performance from the team. The Sky came back hungry after halftime closing the gap and tying it up at one point. The determination of the Dream team pulled through though, with Avery Song and Saoirse Zipp taking over under the boards. This allowed for Meghan DelRossi to work her magic as an incredible player and teammate, creating scoring opportunities. The whole team took their defense to the next level to hold off the Sky and clinch the victory. | | James McKay Boys Tournament | | Congratulations to GVBL players Nolan Curley (4th), Liam Vogt (5th) and Luke Kline (6th) , winners of the McKay All Tournament Team awards. | |
5th Grade Boys Tournament Team - Vipers
On Monday night, the Vipers defeated the 3 seed Paoli Wildcats to advance to the ICBA D2 Championship against the MARA Warriors. Excellent ball movement and suffocating defense was the theme as the Vipers pushed ahead early and never looked back behind leading scorer Saad Nachani. The defense was anchored by Moses Willey and his tenacity in coverage and on the boards, setting the tone and keeping Paoli out of the paint all night. The ICBA D2 Championship will take place on Tuesday March 18th at 6:50 at Arrowhead Elementary in Collegeville.
