GVCO Boasts a Tremendous Board of Directors Dedicated to Philanthropy and Volunteerism in Our Very Own Great Valley Community

Just recently, GVCO Board Member (since 2014), Dennis Zatlin, was awarded the very prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor for his dedication to improving the lives of disadvantaged youth and families in the Philadelphia region. To read the press release, go to Ellis Island award. We highlight this due to the distinguished honor that was bestowed, but also to underscore the type of individuals GVCO is lucky enough to have stewarding our Great Valley Community Organization.

His, and all of our GVCO Board’s leadership, has been critical to the success of GVCO’s mission and plan for many, many years. GVCO’s approach to serving our entire Great Valley community and surrounding region, has been directly impacted by the thoughtful and astute approach in which the board operates. The development and execution of bringing the new GVCO Community Center complex onboard over the past 6+ years is a testament to this leadership. Execution of a very successful initial capital campaign; purchasing the piece of property to house the complex; navigating the pandemic; getting this phase of the facility built; while the entire time maintaining laser focus on what would be best for our entire Great Valley community.

As GVCO begins to reach this incredible milestone, completing the 1st phase of our GVCO Community Center complex in the next few months, please understand the amount of time, energy and resources all of our GVCO Board of Directors has voluntarily given through all the years. The Great Valley community should be very thankful for their dedication and relentlessness, and their steadfast commitment to making Great Valley a wonderful place to live, work and play!

Caring Hands

Reaching out to the Community

GVCO Caring Hands student volunteers spent numerous hours planting flowers, decorating pots and writing notes of encouragement this May for residents at Green Meadows Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Paoli.

For many years, GVCO Caring Hands has delivered flower pots and cards to Green Meadows, in an effort to bring encouragement and a smile to some who just may need something to "pick them up".

Helping the Community

Our volunteers assisted at Senator Carolyn Comitta's Shredding Event and Food Drive at Malvern Fire Company. Students helped unload papers to be shredded and collected donations for the Chester County Food Bank.

SPCA Walk for Paws

GVCO Caring Hands support of the Brandywine Valley SPCA Walk 4 Paws event was a HUGE success! Many families made treats for the Caring Hands bake sale. Over $300 was raised for the SPCA.

Join Caring Hands

Is a student-led volunteer group that supports the community through various activities. Students in grades 7-12 and their parents can sign up for the Constant Contact Caring Hands News distribution list for the 2023-24 school year. Upcoming event information will be found on Caring Hands News & Updates

Siddhant Suresh Fund

The Siddhant Suresh Scholarship Foundation once again helped a number of families with the cost of GVCO programming.

Nearly two thousand dollars in partial and full scholarships enabled children to participate in seasons of GVCO programming.

The scholarship was founded in memory of Siddhant Surresh, a 10 year old Great Valley boy who passionately loved participating in our GVBL programming. To learn more about how you may help other future families in need, please contact info@gvco.org or visit the Siddhant Suresh Scholarship page.

Senior and Older Adult Programming

Even prior to the 2013 decision to purchase land, GVCO had begun to discuss how to incorporate older adult and senior programming into our plans.

We have spent a good bit of time talking with the leadership of Surrey Services, Phoenixville Senior Center and the West Chester Senior Center. And of course we spoke with "our own" small group from the now defunct Great Valley Senior Center.

Through the years, GVCO has hosted a number of different senior programs; a very successful weekly bingo event that went on for 6-7 years, fitness/exercise and yoga classes. Many enjoyed our GVCO Pickleball program when the old GVBL Center facility was open.

We are now super excited as we are making great progress with the new GVCO Community Center, which is scheduled to open its doors later this summer. We have begun to revisit a number of programming ideas that we had put into our business plan over the course of a number of years. We will definitely be offering some things like pickleball to the older adult/senior Great Valley community, but we are also looking for people here in the community to help map out the programming plan and assist with volunteering within this programming.

Would you like to help develop older adult/senior programming at GVCO? Please reach out to community@gvco.org.
