Protecting A Breed From Change
By Anonymous
Browsing the Internet, I came across an article about the reasons Dog Breeds change over time. It got me wondering about our beloved Gypsy Vanner Breed.
Having been involved in breeding and exhibiting dogs for 30 years, over these years I have seen the breed change towards what is winning in the ring, and it has become the fad to breed towards. The alteration of the dog that should resemble the Original Breed Standard happens slowly over time. The dogs can get heavier, hairier, larger, and be unable to perform the tasks that they could when they resembled the Breed Standard, the Form to Function theory. I then witnessed these dogs start to return towards the Original Standard, and be able to return to the athleticism that they were known for. This is a lesson to be learned.
So, what about the Gypsy Vanner? As we Celebrate over 25 years as a Breed, with a Breed Standard that results in a form to function horse that can perform many different activities, we need to be proud of the Gypsy Vanner Horse and its accomplishments so far.
Although there are horse shows, as in the dog world, the amazing thing about the Gypsy Vanner Horse, is the program that has been put in place by the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society to ensure that Breeders have a tool to keep the Breed Standard on track. The Evaluation Program was put in place for education and enrichment of the breeder to produce the best quality, and a Gypsy Vanner as close to the Breed Standard as they possibly can.

This “Evaluation Program” is a tool to score horses against the breed standard, and a tool to help eliminate deviations from the breed. This program is used by dedicated breeders whose intent on maintaining Breed Type is rewarded. They know that breeding correct type will make sure that this breed does not change.
Keep up the great work, use the tools that the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society put in place for the Members, Breeders, Exhibitors. Use the Evaluation Program, show off your results of being a conscientious breeder.
Education of the Gypsy Vanner Breeders, Judges, Exhibitors is the key, and one of the most important tools to ensure the Breed Standard is maintained and the vision of the Original Breed Standard of the Gypsy Vanner Horse can be maintained. The future is in our hands……keep this amazing breed moving forward with Breed Standard in mind, and you will be rewarded with amazing animals.

GVHS Evaluations - SIGN UP TODAY!!!
January 10, 2024 – Jacksonville, FL -prior to the FHC show

The Gypsy Vanner Horse Evaluation Program has been developed as an educational tool for the horse breeder, to promote thoughtful breeding of Gypsy Vanner Horses of the type as detailed in the breed standard, and for the public to educate them about the breed.
The program’s purpose is to help breeders and owners to educate themselves about the strengths and weaknesses of their horses so they can use this knowledge in making educated breeding and purchasing decisions.
This system should be viewed as an important tool to help preserve the wonderful characteristics of the Gypsy Vanner Horse.
The conformation-movement evaluation is also an integral part of the GVHS Registration process. Horses lacking DNA verification of both sire and dam require a certain minimum conformation-movement evaluation score to move from the GVHS Pre-Studbook into the Regular Studbook.

The Vanner Advantage Program
The Vanner Advantage Program is a program that provides awards to those who get their Gypsy Vanner out to events to present the breed to the public. The points are accumulated based on individual horse. To be eligible for the Vanner Advantage awards, the horse must be GVHS Registered and the owner must be a GVHS member. Likewise Youth participants must be GVHS Youth members to participate in this program.
This list is not all inclusive but following are examples of some of the types of events that qualify for Vanner Advantage points; open multi-discipline shows (local fairs/ 4H); open discipline specific competitions (dressage, driving, hunter-jumper, eventing, endurance, combined driving etc.), expositions and breed demonstrations, organized trail rides, clinics open to the public, parades. If you are not sure if your event qualifies check with the GVHS office. Breed shows that qualify in the GVHS Points Program, and virtual shows do not count toward Vanner Advantage points.
