Hail to the 2018 College of Professional Studies Graduates

Students bubbled with excitement as they filed into the Charles E. Smith Center on May 19, 2018, to be formally recognized for their hard work and perseverance as 2018 graduates of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the College of Professional Studies (CPS) and the Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM).
Inspirational speakers and special award presentations contributed to the festivities, ending in a special charge to the graduates.

GW Paralegal Studies Program Honors Slain Activist
|
Keynote speaker Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer, a paralegal killed protesting neo-Nazis in Charlottesville nine months ago, told Paralegal Studies graduates to “make a difference in the world” at their commencement ceremony in May. Ms. Heyer was posthumously inducted into Lambda Epsilon Chi (LEX), the national paralegal honor society, along with 22 GW graduates at the celebration.

Distinguished Panel Discusses Application of the Law of War to Cyber Operations
A panel of top ranking defense officials, lawyers and policy experts gathered on May 3 at GW to discuss the application of the law of war to cyber operations in times of peace and times of war. The forum, hosted by The Cyber Security Forum Initiative (CSFI) and GW's Cybersecurity Strategy and Information Management master's degree program, provided an opportunity for attendees to learn more about law and policy for cyberspace operations.

Admitted Students Welcomed to College of Professional Studies
Newly admitted students are being welcomed to GW’s College of Professional Studies at a series of “Meet & Greet” events, where they can meet faculty, staff and other admitted students before fall classes begin. The events also give them the opportunity to ask questions and to gather information from specialized departments like admissions, financial aid, student and career services.

Elaine Lammert Appointed Program Director
|
|
Congratulations to Ms. Elaine Lammert for her appointment as Program Director of both the Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity Strategy and Information Management masters programs, effective July 1. She also holds the title of associate professor in the College of Professional Studies.
She is currently serving as the Interim Program Director of both programs. Ms. Lammert came to GW following 28 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and additional professional experience working as a private consultant.

Sustainable Urban Planning Graduate Receives Prestigious GW Award
|
|
“I’m honored to receive the George Washington Award, one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the GW University in recognition of my significant contributions to university life -- in front of 25,000 people at the National Mall,” tweeted Fjollë Caka, May 2018 Sustainable Urban Planning master’s degree graduate.
Since she came to GW two years ago, Fjollë has distinguished herself with high academic achievements and numerous contributions to university life.

Cybersecurity Student Honored for High Academic Achievement

Cameron Peters, a May 2018 graduate from the cybersecurity undergraduate degree program, was honored for high academic achievement at the university’s Annual Academic Honors Dinner in late April.
He was named the 2018 Distinguished Scholar for the College of Professional Studies, one of a select group of nine graduating seniors singled out by each GW school to deliver brief remarks at the event.

Jane Thorpe Appointed Interim Department Chair at Milken
Congratulations to Jane Hyatt Thorpe, J.D. who has been appointed interim department chair in the Department of Health Policy and Management, Milken Institute School of Public Health, effective July 1. Thorpe also serves as the program director for the Healthcare Corporate Compliance Graduate Certificate program in the College of Professional Studies.
