Dr. Mardi Gomberg-Maitland Joins GW Cardiology to Lead Pulmonary Hypertension Program

The GW Medical Faculty Associates welcomes Dr. Mardi Gomberg, as Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) and Director of the GW Advanced Pulmonary Hypertension Program.  Pulmonary hypertension is a life-threatening disease that results in very high blood pressure limited to the arteries in the lungs resulting in heart failure. This condition causes severe shortness of breath greatly restricting physical activity. Pulmonary hypertension can be from lung disease, heart disease, connective tissue diseases and other diseases. This is a highly challenging condition to treat requiring a highly specialized team to select and monitor new approved and investigational medications.
Dr. Gomberg is an internationally recognized leader in the field of pulmonary hypertension. She spent 12 years as director of the pulmonary hypertension program at the University of Chicago. A highly respected leader in the development and testing of new pulmonary hypertension medications, she served as Chair of the Pulmonary Hypertension Counsel for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and leads the Education Committee of Pulmonary Hypertension Association Scientific Leadership Council. Dr Gomberg has been a member of multiple steering committees for national and international pulmonary hypertension drug trials and serves as a consultant to both the FDA and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. She recently participated as a member of the 2018 World Symposium for Pulmonary Hypertension as a senior member of the 'New Drugs and Trial Designs' task force. She serves as an Associate Editor for multiple major medical journals including CHEST and the European Respiratory Journal, and is the editor of the pulmonary hypertension section for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. She has participated in over 45 clinical trials and has over 120 publications and 10 book chapters. She is a highly sought after international speaker on new developments in the field of pulmonary hypertension.
Dr. Gomberg has established a comprehensive pulmonary hypertension program at the George Washington University Medical Center. Her pulmonary hypertension team includes Jalil Ahari, MD from the Pulmonary Medicine Division. Dr. Marvin Konstam serves as 2019 Understein Memorial Visiting Professor

Dr. Marvin Konstam

On January 9-10, 2019, Dr. Marvin Konstam served at the GW Heart & Vascular Institute's 2019 Understein Memorial Visiting Professor. Dr. Konstam is an internationally-known expert on heart failure and cardiac care. Dr. Konstam delivered GW Cardiology Grand Rounds on "Acute Heart Failure and the Cardio-Renal Syndrome. Are we making progress?" and Medical Grand Rounds on "The Future of Cardiovascular Care: Advanced Technologies, Affordable Care, and Academic Medical System" to more than 200 GW faculty and trainees.
Dr. Konstam is the Chief Physician Executive at The Cardiovascular Center at Tufts Medical Center and is Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine where he is recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award. Dr. Konstam previously served as President of the Heart Failure Society of America and as President of the Association of Professors of Cardiology, as Senior Advisor for Cardiovascular Diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and Chair of the Council on Academic Cardiology of the American College of Cardiology. He currently serves on the Health Affairs Committee of the ACC. Dr. Konstam has published over 300 articles and over 35 books, monographs, and chapters and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Heart Failure Society of America.
The Understein Memorial Lecture Fund was established in 1978 by the family of Jack Understein, in gratitude for the care provided at GW. The Institute is grateful to the Understein family for its generous contribution that makes this annual lectureship and tribute to Jack Understein. Jack Understein's son, Norman Understein, attended the lecture and joined Dr. Konstam and GW's cardiology fellows for dinner following the event.

Dr. B. Hadley Wilson

Dr. B. Hadley Wilson is a leading interventional cardiologist at the t he Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute Carolinas HealthCare System/Atrium Health and Clinical Professor of Medicine at  UNC School of Medicine. Dr. Wilson is a national leader for the American College of Cardiology and has served as Board of Governors Chair and Membership Committee Board of Trustees at the ACC. As Board Chair, Dr. Wilson has promoted the ACC mission of improving cardiovascular care internationally. On January 23rd, Dr. Wilson delivered GW Cardiology Grand Rounds and presented " ACC Global ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) Project. " This is a world wide heart focus initiative to improve the treatment of heart attack in third world countries.
