Join Us in Creating Change in New Communities
"We're going to build a community, a classical community, that in many ways is going to write the definition of what classical education can be for Baton Rouge, and really, for the entire state."
Samuel Heisman

"We will need magnanimous leaders who are willing to go deeper and further into the responsibilities of school leadership than they currently are able to in their current positions."

Embracing Growth and Change
Follow the professional journey that led these two Great Hearts employees to take on new opportunities this month.
Dena Franco
New Headmaster, Arlington Upper School
As a humanities teacher at a local school district, Dena Franco had already seen what a rich curriculum could do for students. “I was first drawn to Great Hearts because of our vision to offer classical, liberal arts education to scholars and communities who would not otherwise have access to this beautiful tradition,” Ms. Franco says. “So, when Great Hearts Lakeside opened near our neighborhood, I enthusiastically became a Great Hearts parent and was honored to join Great Hearts Arlington as the founding Assistant Headmaster the following year.”

Now, as she looks forward to her position as Headmaster, Ms. Franco credits her mentor, Dr. Claudia MacMillan, for awakening in her a sense of the epic, as well as colleague Andrew Duininck, APEX, and the National Symposium for helping her grow “practically and philosophically.” In the challenge ahead, she knows that continuing to bring Great Hearts’ vision to a new community will be a fulfilling one. Arlington's position as a Title I open enrollment, public charter school brings unique needs: "We understand that our student body will change every year and many times during those years, so I expect one of the more challenging aspects of leading our upper school will be sharing our mission and vision with scholars and families who are unfamiliar with what makes Great Hearts distinctive." Ms. Franco further shares, “I know that this new role will stretch me and require me to grow in new ways. A school culture that is inclined towards that which is True, Good, and Beautiful does not happen accidentally, so I want us to continue to be thoughtful and wise about what we establish knowing that our choices shape who we become as a school.”
Katy Monwai
New Headmaster, Lakeside Upper School
Before coming to Great Hearts, Katy Monwai was no stranger to classical education. She began her teaching career at the Covenant School, where she says she had “fallen in love” with classical education, and thus began her master’s degree in humanities at the University of Dallas. “I met many Great Hearts folks at UD, and I was drawn to the opportunity to provide a classical education to the broader community,” she says. “I was also excited to be a part of opening a brand-new school.” She joined the Lakeside Great Hearts campus in Fort Worth as the founding Assistant Headmaster in 2020, and now prepares to step into her new role as Headmaster.

A key part of leadership, Ms. Monwai states, is maintaining perspective: “Much of leadership seems to be about ruling myself well, since, in the end, I’m the only one I can control!" Ms. Monwai says that working with a counselor, as well as the Great Hearts-sponsored Executive Coaching Series with Keith Merron, helped her "learn to rule myself better." She also credits other leaders, like Mandi Cannon, for helping her build what she calls her “leadership toolbox.” Looking forward to her upcoming role, Ms. Monwai is excited to influence her community and be “a part of something bigger than myself... It’s been very rewarding to see how the Lakeside campus has filled a gap in the educational options in southwest Fort Worth and to know that parents are so grateful for the opportunity to have their kids here.” Another perk of the job? “I’m also excited to be able to choose the art for the walls!”

Dr. William Bridges, Author
(1933-2013)
Managing Change and Transition
In this month's featured article, Alison Westerlind refers to William Bridges' model of transition. The University of Victoria also alludes to Bridges' work in this overview of executing change while minding perhaps the most important aspect of that process: the people involved. To learn more, see the article below with included workbook to assess upcoming changes and the ways in which they may impact colleagues.
