Guests piled their shirt and tie donations high by the front door of La Taberna Giralda, and then enjoyed free sangria and tapas and a traditional flamenco show.

Over 175 shirts and too many ties to count were delivered to the team on Saturday, August 17th at a pizza party thrown by the Ponce Society for the Gables High players. The Ponce Society of Young Professionals was founded in October 2011 as the young professionals outreach of the Coral Gables Community Foundation joining its mission to that of the Foundation: "To foster programs and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for people living and working in 'The City Beautiful'." A self-governing Committee was assembled with the purpose of supporting the Foundation in carrying out its mission, and in getting more young professionals involved in Foundation initiatives and activities. ______________________________________________________

The Guardianship Program of Dade County, Inc. has been in existence for 30 years. The agency is a private non-profit corporation funded by Miami-Dade County, the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs, the Florida Bar Foundation and other private foundations. This agency serves as the public guardian for the 11th Judicial Circuit. In that capacity they are appointed legal guardian for adults that have been adjudicated incapacitated, are of limited financial means and have no one else able or willing to care for them. In many instances these individuals have been the victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation. In many cases this abuse is at the hands of family members who currently are supposed to care for the individual. The program with its full time staff of 42 professionals handles the ward's financial, medical, personal, legal and societal needs. The services provided by this agency are unique. As legal guardian, the staff of the Guardianship Program is called upon to make very difficult and often personal decisions for the client without the benefit of having a familial relationship with that individual. This includes making end of life decisions. Since the program's inception they have assisted over 6000 individuals and currently represent 1135 incapacitated persons.

DID YOU KNOW?

Coral Gables was part of a "City Beautiful Movement" of the 1890s and 1900s. Other 'cities beautiful' include Memphis, Tennessee, and Denver, Colorado. Coral Gables came to life through the vision of George E. Merrick. The Merrick Society, named in his honor, invites you to "dream in color" as he did, and bring your philanthropic and community vision to life through a charitable trust.

George E. Merrick

ABOUT THE MERRICK SOCIETY
