Dear Friends of the Arts,
Our hearts have been warmed by more than the hot weather this month. We have been so encouraged by the many people who have sent in their memberships for the Center, and how many donations have come in. We also are over the moon to report that we have heard from a family foundation, who will sponsor installing an elevator in the building. This is truly a game changer for us, as it makes sure that everything we do in the future will be fully accessible to all. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported us in any way, large or small. We are also grateful for being the recipient of a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Creating this new art space is a big endeavor, and with the help of our extended community, it’s happening!

New Building Progress Report

The layout of the interior of the lower level and performance space is now clear to see. Steel studs for interior walls are up everywhere, thanks to Montgomery/Timmerman Construction. Elite Plumbing has been working hard at getting the plumbing needs taken care of, and the electrical work is beginning. Once we get the electrical and HVAC work done, then we will be able to start with drywall and insulation on the walls.

Virtual Exhibit
Celebrating Summer
Summer is heating up and showing us her fiery side with fireworks on the holidays and our typical midwestern storms with Nature’s own display. Celebrations are happening every week, and our regional artists have shared their talents to depict the joys of summer in paintings, photos, sculptures, quilts, and poetry.

Many of the pieces of artwork are for sale. To learn how you can purchase something for your own collection, please contact Patricia

The Stuff of Dreams
August 23 is the deadline to submit work for our next virtual show. The exhibit will debut as a flip-book in the September newsletter and print copies will be available for purchase with an order through the gallery manager. The theme this time is “The Stuff of Dreams,” which will mean different things to different people. You are free to interpret it as you wish, but please give us a little story about what your artwork means to you. Just finding a photograph to include with this article was difficult—floating among the clouds is a typical dream, perhaps, but I found lots of photos in my collection that would work too—walking among the giant redwoods, a day on the beach with my family, a glorious dinner at a famed New York restaurant, or eating lobster on the coast of Maine. The first snowfall in Galena is always magical and dream-worthy for sure. Show us your dreams! All mediums are welcome—photographs, paintings, sculptures, fiber arts, poetry, or however you express yourself through art.

With the physical gallery still shuttered, and construction in our new site, we thought you might want to see what our regional artists are up to.

Artist Jenna Lueck decided that she needed to make lemonade when life handed everyone lemons. During the pandemic, she moved ahead with plans for the future. Lueck switched her focus to commission paintings, did a website redesign, launched a new social media campaign and built an in-home studio where she would be able to showcase her captivating, vibrant work once the world made a return to normal.
This June, Lueck threw open her studio & gallery doors to the public for the first time with a magnificent grand opening. In July, she dove head first back into outdoor art festivals. As we put the pandemic behind us, Jenna is excited to continue to create commission paintings in her new studio, showcase her work at art festivals, and hold events in her new studio & gallery space!

Need to send a special message for a birthday, anniversary or just want to let someone know you care? The “Love Notes”, a small group of singers who have been rehearsing outdoors for safety, will go to your friend’s door, or place of work in the Galena area, and surprise them with a song!
Just $25 to cover costs.
Limited dates available.
Please call 815-777-0410 to schedule a song!

Art That Stands Out in Its Field
How’s your garden growing? Have you noticed any crows lurking around waiting for a morsel of corn or beans to enjoy? You might need a scarecrow!
Galena Center for the Arts is once again seeking scarecrows. Dig deep into your closet and
discover some worn out clothes to dress a wooden frame to be displayed at the Center or anywhere around Galena. Bring your creations before September 18th, (Email Patricia to arrange a time for delivery.) and we will install them on the grounds next to the Center and in downtown Galena. Or you can put them in your own front yard. They will remain up through Halloween.
There will be no security for them, and we are not responsible for any vandalism or theft. Use whatever materials you prefer, with the knowledge that they will be displayed outdoors for several weeks. We expect a height range of 5–7 feet. The scarecrows will be reviewed for appropriateness and should one be found to be offensive, controversial, or political, the creator will be asked to either change its message or remove the display.
This could be a great family or friends project, and all ages are welcome to participate. Please let us know if you would like to join in the fun of promoting Galena Center for the Arts with a scarecrow in Galena. If you have questions, or to just get more information, contact Patricia at: gallerymanager@galenacenterforthearts.com.
