"Fete de la Musique - 2021"

Dear Friends of the Arts,
Summer is here, and with summer, each July, we send out our annual membership requests. We were happily surprised that, during this pandemic year, even with our physical doors closed, our membership has grown. We thank all of our members for their faith in us.
We dedicated the last year to responding effectively to the many difficulties of the situation, and adapted by creating virtual art which could be experienced via our website and on YouTube. We also took the leap to buy and renovate an amazing building in a great location, so that we will have many new opportunities to grow and better serve our community in the future.
Construction is moving apace, and we invite you to see our progress on our “Hard-hat Tour,” described below in the newsletter. We plan to open the performance space to the public this fall, and to open the visual arts areas upstairs by spring of 2022.
If you are not already a member, please, consider becoming a member of the Galena Center for the Arts. Together, we are creating a wonderful addition to the future of our region. And to those stalwart members who have kept us afloat, the future is looking bright, thanks to you!

Wishing you a beautiful summer,
Carole

Virtual Exhibit
Celebrating Summer
On hot summer days, it’s a treat to flip through our current exhibit, “Celebrating Summer,” in the comfort of our own homes. The events that were postponed last year are coming to life. The gardens are blooming, and the vegetables are being harvested and brought to market. It’s time to spend time on the water or blow bubbles in your backyard. Our regional artists have interpreted these delightful days through paintings, sculptures, quilts, poetry, and photographs. Many of the pieces of artwork are for sale. Contact Patricia for details on how you can purchase them for your collection.

We hope you enjoy the talents of our regional artists and support
the arts in our community. See our flip book here, and

They frequently perform in the area and are loved for their homegrown style that has a simple groove and harmony that you will enjoy and remember. Music starts at 7:00 pm. Bring a chair, enjoy some live music and enjoy hearing original work from these talented area musicians.

New Board of Directors Members
In June we welcomed two new members to our Board of Directors, Cathie Elsbree and Connie Warnsing. Both have been exceptional support helpers for the Center in many ways, and we look forward to working with them in this new role. Our thanks go to Nick Hyde and Susan Barg, who are revolving off the board at the end of their three year terms, for all they have done for the Center for the Arts.
With the physical gallery still shuttered, and construction in our new site, we thought you might want to see what our regional artists are up to.

Mackenzie has been working on a painting of a koi pond. She finds koi beautiful and interesting to paint. In Japanese culture, koi fish represent good fortune and perseverance. During this pandemic, everyone has needed a lot of strength and perseverance to get thru the day to day struggles. She finds a lot of peace and healing while creating art.
Being able to have an outlet for emotions, both good and bad, has been extremely helpful when feeling isolated from the outside world. Creating art is a reminder that there is still beauty and light, even in difficult times, and a way to connect with others who are also struggling.

Don’t Hesitate, Vaccinate!
The Center, in a project spearheaded by Cindy Tegtmeyer, is collaborating with Arts Alliance Illinois to encourage our community to be vaccinated for Covid-19. As restrictions are lifted, the arts and culture sector in Illinois recognizes that continuing to get their audiences and communities vaccinated is important for safely getting back to in-person arts activities. Artists in 24 regions across Illinois are creating over 72 pro-vaccination projects this summer as vaccines are now widely available.

James Salazar, award-winning Galena High School Senior, is putting the finishing touches on his digital art piece titled, “Don’t Hesitate, Vaccinate!” Be on the lookout for these posters hung around town soon. Tony Barbosa is honoring his friend who suffered from Covid-19 with a beautiful multi-medium art installation at Kaladi’s Coffee Bar on Main Street. And actress Cindy Tegtmeyer will lead pop up, “FREE HUGS, I’m Vaccinated,” performance art pieces during the week of July 18th. She will be accompanied by fully vaccinated middle school artists; 13-year-old musician Liliana Asta and 12-year old photographer/videographer Macklan Murphy.

Thank you to metal artist Joan Grippo for donating this wonderful art bench to the Center. It fits perfectly outside our side door, and encourages us to occasionally sit down and enjoy the view.

Need to send a special message for a birthday, anniversary or just want to let someone know you care? The “Love Notes”, a small group of singers who have been rehearsing outdoors for safety, will go to your friend’s door, or place of work, and surprise them with a song! Starting in August. More details in next month’s newsletter.
