June Newsletter
Coming to the Center in June!
Dear Friends of the Arts,
It’s been a whirlwind of activity at the Center lately, and it feels wonderful to resume being a Center for the ARTS. What a joy to see artists coming and going, bringing new artwork for our first major exhibit in the new building, aptly named Emergence.

In May, we had an enthusiastic Youth Art Gallery opening, studio artists have been working in their studios, and engaged audiences experienced Table Readings and Songwriters Showcase. And there’s so much more coming! Scroll down to read about the Juliani Ensemble, Fete de la Musique, and the Jimmys Blues Band Fundraiser, all in June.

I hope to see you at the June 3 Emergence art opening, and will be available to give tours of the downstairs performance space. Just ask me. Looking forward to a wonderful artistic summer.

Embrace the Experience!
Carole
Time to get involved! We still need greeters for the gallery, and volunteers to help with serving at openings, ushering at music and theatre events, garden maintenance, and more!

If you would like to help out as a greeter, please go to
Signupgenius.com and choose the dates you would like to help. It’s not hard, and it’s so much fun to meet other art lovers, and show off our wonderful new space. For other volunteer opportunities, email Carole.
Thanks so much!

Progress Report for May
Work goes on! Sometimes it feels like it is endless, but bit by bit there is progress.

The big excitement is that in a couple weeks we should have a functioning elevator.

Earl Thompson’s wonderful crew finished the masonry for the shaft, Kloss/Winter Electric managed to get power to it, and the Braun TK Elevator crew have been working hard to install the elevator. The elevator now has doors, upstairs and down!

Work continues on drop ceilings, flooring, HVAC, plumbing, painting, and so much more! We still have some supply issues (interior doors, for example), but are making do in whatever ways we can. We hope to have our audience restrooms in operation soon.
Emergence

To be revealed, uncovered, disclosed; quietly, slowly, gradually.
Gallery Exhibit June 3—July 31, 2022
Still Under Wraps
photograph by Mary Katos
We are excited to emerge into our new gallery! After more than two years of being closed, the artists are ready to bring their work to light for this exhibit. It promises to be a diverse show with pottery, fiber art, paintings, photography, and sculpture by regional artists.

Bob Rivoire has again submitted a slideshow of his photos, which can be viewed on a large screen as a part of the exhibit.

Join us for the opening night, June 3, 5-7pm with bubbly and chocolates to celebrate. The exhibit will be open to the public Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 11am—4pm through the end of July.
The Juliani Ensemble
The Juliani Ensemble will be in Galena for two different presentations at the Center.
Saturday, June 4
Saturday, June 4, will be an hour long informal "Meet the Juliani Ensemble" event at 5 pm where they will have the chance to talk about their music, preview some of the repertoire, and interact with everyone. Especially good for young people, and anyone who would like insight into the ensemble and their music.
Sunday, June 5
Anita Graef, Emily Graef, Julian Graef
Sunday, June 5, will be a Chamber Music Concert beginning at 3 pm.
The Juliani Ensemble, a highly acclaimed chamber music ensemble comprised of world class musicians, has delighted audiences with inventive, energetic chamber music concerts since its inception in 1999. As a performing partner at the Chicago Cultural Center in Preston Bradley Hall, the Juliani Ensemble performed to enthusiastic, appreciative audiences for over twenty years.

The core of the ensemble is comprised primarily of members of the multi generational Graef family musicians.

The Juliani Ensemble’s mission is to spread the joy of music through performance, education, outreach and artistry of the highest level.
Thanks to generous donors and the
Arts Midwest GIG grant, these events will be free!

(Donations always welcome, of course.)
This engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Fete de la Musique
Thursday, June 16, 7 pm
Fete de la Musique is an annual international event, celebrating – and reveling in – music, arts and culture. It is a night to promote music by encouraging everyone to participate, as a performer, a listener, or simply a spectator.

The Center will celebrate by offering an open mic evening, hosted by Lenny Wayne. Bring your voice or instrument, or just come to listen, and join in the fun. We’ll be outdoors if it’s nice weather, or can go into the performance space if weather is bad. Bring a picnic if you like! Beverages will be available.

Sign in for the open mic at 6:30, music starts at 7 pm.
Plan on a great time! Party with us at
The Jimmys Blues Band Fundraiser

View from the Studio
Al Elsbree has spent a spent a lifetime drawing down the sides of his math papers, bills and anything with numbers on it, finding compositions everywhere: smashed beer cans, clouds, Muffler men statues...seeing the world kind of askew. He taught Middle School art for 36 years, being named outstanding Kane County Middle School educator of the year in 1990. His students painted murals all over the school, and even in local restaurants in Aurora. During the years he taught, he always had a piece he was working on in his art room. After he retired, he felt lost because he had no studio in which to paint, so he began a love affair with photography and the computer.
Finally, he is inspired to paint again…what is that inspiration? His beautiful new studio at Galena Center for the Arts. There are artists all around him, something he has been looking for for years. His new studio is right in the middle of all the art action, just where he wants to be. Great things are coming, he is convinced!
