March Exhibit: Women Photographers of Connecticut
|
"Through Her Eyes," was a month-long exhibit by the Women Photographers of Connecticut, an online organization. With 1.7K members, the group was founded to support Connecticut women with a passion for photography. Over 40 photos were on display in the gallery and a number of pieces were sold. The exhibit has ended, but you can still see the virtual exhibit online.

“CLAY’S THE WAY” AT G53 POTTERY STUDIO

In Instructor Nancy Scilipote’s Hand-Built Pottery classes, students who’ve never worked in the medium before are making some amazing pieces! Ms. Scilipote encourages students to let their imaginations run free and look for everyday objects that can be used as tools to create interesting textures and effects. She has day and evening classes, and students in both sessions have responded with enthusiasm and creativity, many of them registering for a second session.

Besides classes, artists can book time in our fully-equipped Pottery Studio which includes several electric pottery wheels and an updated kiln. Contact the gallery for details.

Every year, we ask artists to upcycle used furniture into unique creations which are sold to benefit Gallery 53. If you’d like to participate, but need a piece of furniture to paint, just call 203-235-5347 or email the gallery! CHAIR-ity will officially kick off at the end of April and we’ll also be hosting and Wine, Cheese & Chairs Night on Thursday evening, May 19th. Stay tuned for details!

QUILT OF CARING DONATED TO DCF
G53 President Christine Webster recently donated a large-scale mosaic to DCF for their new office on Research Parkway in Meriden. Called the “Quilt of Caring,” it was created during the COVID Pandemic by twenty-four students aged 6-14 and their group leaders, under the direction of Chris Webster.

Do you know a high school senior who plans to pursue an art career? If they have a good academic record, demonstrated community involvement AND have been accepted as a full-time student at a recognized college, university, or community college, then they would be eligible to apply for the Irma Morse Scholarship.
Due date is April 30th.

Raise the Roof Update
Since the Meriden City Council approved American Rescue Plan Funds to cover the cost of replacing our roof and stabilizing our building, the team at City Hall is taking on the monumental task of preparing specifications and obtaining bids from qualified contractors. We are extremely grateful for this expert assistance!

MOSAIC OF THE MONTH: Meriden Traffic Tower
The Meriden Traffic Tower Mosaic evokes nostalgia for days gone by, when Meriden's Downtown was a bustling commercial and social center. Recreated here in a large scale (38" x 48") stained glass mosaic created by G53's Mosaic Magic Team, this piece features bright daffodils in the foreground, and Castle Craig in the background.

Handmade Artisan Pottery
by Deborah Haggett
The G53 Gift Shop is thrilled to feature the work of Meriden artisan Deborah Haggett. Deborah creates handmade artisan pottery inspired by her immediate surroundings. This beautiful “Sunflower Bowl” with free-flowing curvilinear forms on the outer surface and a row of glazed sunflowers on the inside rim, is just one of over a dozen pieces available at the G53 Gift Shop.
