GARY O'NEIL RECEIVES HUMANITARIAN AWARD!
|
Please join us in congratulating Gary O’Neil, a great friend of Gallery 53, for being selected to receive the 2021 – 22 Bassett Distinguished Humanitarian Award through Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). CCSU presents the awards bi-annually to highlight the legacy of Ebenezer Bassett who, in 1853, became the first African American to attend and graduate from State Normal School (now CCSU). Bassett went on to become a noted educator, a prominent abolitionist leader, and the nation's first African American diplomat. The award will be presented in a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, March 1st. All of us at Gallery 53 are grateful to Mr. O’Neil for initiating our extremely successful Bread & Broth fundraisers, and we are delighted to see him receive this well-deserved honor.

TWISTED VISIONS: Not Your Grandfather's Art Exhibit
April Abstract Show
|
We constantly seek to support new artists, new voices, new work. By dedicating an exhibit to abstract art, we hope to attract those new voices as well as provide exposure for our member artists' more experimental, less traditional work. Paintings, drawings, photographs, and digital compositions will be accepted April 1st and April 2nd in the gallery. Digital photos for the virtual exhibit can be submitted any time before April 4th at G53’s Online Exhibit Entry web page.

COLD WAX/OIL PAINT DEMO
With Gina Dunlap
Saturday, April 23rd: 10-11:30am
|
Cold Wax has been around for centuries, but now that Gamblin has put it in a can, artists are discovering the beauty, versatility, and possibilities of this fascinating way to make art. This demo will look at the properties of Cold Wax Medium (CWM) and the methods of working with it. Cold Wax mixed with oil paint allows you to work loosely, intuitively, and boldly, as well as achieve a subtle, translucent surface with depth and layers of meaning as you build up and scribe and scrape away layers of paint. It is also a perfect way to embed materials such as gold leaf, sand for texture, and thin papers for collage. This demo is FREE, but space is LIMITED! Reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Register today!
