Botanica at Dedee Shattuck Gallery
in Westport, Massachusetts now through May 31

ds
                            Reluctant Sexpot by Jessica Calderwood.

A rose is a rose is a rose, or is it? In the past and surely in years to come, the relationship between art and nature is a concentration many artists explore. And though you may think you've seen it all when it comes to art and the environment, the current exhibition at Dedee Shattuck Gallery features seven artists who provide different takes on the emphasis. Botanica is a group exhibition that explores flora in a variety of mediums—fitting for an exhibition showing for the entirety of May. The work on display by the featured artists incorporates differing textures and perspectives, all which offer a refreshing view on manmade versus natural beauty. Jessica Calderwood, an image-maker and sculptor whose work is featured above, combines flower/botanical forms with fragments of the human body to address the narrative of the human life cycle: growth, metamorphosis, aging, death. Reenie Barrow's images reflect her interest in photographing flowers as metaphors, which then serve as catalysts for the viewer to contemplate words, sensations or memories. Leslie Ferst explores the interplay between reality, illusion and memory to create organic natural spaces for one to inhabit with her ceramics. Sculptor and environmental artist Beth Galston creates site-specific installations using light and various materials to transform spaces. Anna Kristina Goransson's investigation of seeds and new growth led to her works in white wool, which she creates then dyes, giving a sense that the forms are pumped full of pulsating, colorful life. Painter Georgia Marsh is inspired by the millennial presence of flower painting throughout the histories of art. Yoonmi Nam's drawings and prints use images of manmade environments and cut flower arrangements to evoke a sense of time that is both fleeting and forever. Botanica is on view now through Sunday, May 31 at Dedee Shattuck Gallery. Come experience this world of flowers the seven featured artists have created.

Exquisite Corpse at Gallery Seven
in Maynard, Massachusetts now through May 22

gallery7
                         Lime-Vicky by Mary K. Mooney.

The name of the game is Exquisite Corpse. Or maybe that's the name of Gallery Seven's current exhibition. Actually, that's the name of both. Yes, you read that right—Exquisite Corpse is based off an old parlor game. Invented in the 1920s by surrealists, exquisite corpse began as a writing game and was later played as a drawing game. In the game, a piece of paper is folded into 3 parts. The first artist draws a head then folds it over and passes it to the next artist who is only allowed to see the end of what the previous artist has drawn. The next artist draws a torso and the third, the legs. When the paper is unfolded, a collaborative drawing is revealed. In the nature of good times, ten Artspace Maynard artists decided to get together to give the game a go. Over the scope of two months, the artists swapped papers and projects. Once the final products were revealed, each artist set out to create two finished pieces of artwork inspired by two drawings of the game. The ten collaborating artists are Priscilla Alpaugh Cotter, Ingrid Goldbloom Bloch, Sue Huszar, Judith Jaffe, Sarah Jeppson Zitter, Rachel Korn, Sam Linnane, Mary K. Mooney, Gwen Murphy and Denise Shea. The game, or the process itself, is as much about the atmosphere as it is the art. Artist Priscilla Alpaugh Cotter says, "I've enjoyed not only the gathering of a group of artists who otherwise would not be likely to connect, but also the excitement of creating something new with little control over the outcome." After the drawing party, Sam Linnane said, "now the solitary work begins—imagining these creatures come to life, involving them in my own inner world and giving them stories with roles to play." These completed stories and roles are on view in Exquisite Corpse: Surrealist Fun, showing at Gallery Seven now through Friday, March 22.

Presence and Absence at Bromfield Gallery
in Boston, Massachusetts now through May 31

bromfield
Detached Attachment by Lesley Cohen, charcoal and chalk pastel.

It's been proven: the more you remember something—from memory, that is—the less accurate that memory becomes. This phenomenon of our brains distorting our abilities of recollection has inspired the current solo exhibition at Bromfield Gallery. In Presence and Absence, artist Lesley Cohen explores her interpretations of childhood memories through her abstract charcoal and pastel drawings. Cohen says, "Thinking about them for years or decades has changed my perception of them, has changed my memory of them and has maybe even changed the significance of the events themselves." Her drawings conceal these ambiguous incidents in an abstract vocabulary of line and space, exposing while still protecting those memories. Cohen's drawings begin with a general idea including a scaffold of compositional elements and, working intuitively, the piece evolves from there. As she works, new dimensions of meaning emerge. Each drawing transcribes an ongoing conversation between the materials, the marks her hand makes and her emerging vision. Of this process, the artist says, "I am on a journey to discover the secrets that are embedded in the process. During periods of reflection, the image and I inform each other to reach a unique visual resolution." Many of these improvisational creations are drawn from the deterioration of interconnecting structures, imagined geographic formations and the organic world—decayed nature, weathered surfaces and rusted metal. Cohen received her MFA from Boston University and her BS from State University College of New York at Buffalo. She has participated in juried shows at DeCordova Museum, Danforth Museum, Mills Gallery and Boston University, where she also served as an adjunct professor. Currently, Cohen lives and works outside of Boston. Her abstracted memories in Presence and Absence are awaiting your artistic eye at Bromfield Gallery now through Sunday, May 31.
