Happy New Year!

We are excited and anxious as we begin the next phase of our school year.

As we begin I would encourage our parents to utilize our school website to keep up to date with end of the year activities, programs and community/student fun-filled events.

Thank You to Everyone who donated to our Food Drive we were able to help 22 families this holiday season.

During the holidays it is amazing to see the support the parents, school community and faculty/staff provides through the Giving Tree. Many GRMS families had a Happy Holiday because of those who gave a little extra. Mrs. Willis, Mrs. Wynn and Nurse Hardwick and all of the other elves in the office work so hard to make this happen!

As Always Thank You for Your Support!!!

News from the Media Center
  GRMS Library...
We had our first Book Bistro on December 15, 2016 for all the students who have read at least five Sunshine State Young Readers books during first semester. We were very pleased that 31 students completed at least 5 books and have read over 1,000 pages each. Three of our students have completed all 15 SSYRA titles. Ms. Michele Weber Hurwitz, author of “The Summer I Saved the World in 65 Days” did a Skype session with our students from her home in Chicago.
She gave us excellent information on why she wrote her book and gave us insight to some of the characters she developed in the story. The students were able to ask her many of their questions and it was the first time many of our students have interacted with an author.

Makerspace Lunch Times...
Our 8th grade WEB students have been assisting us during our Makerspace times at lunch. Once students have completed their lunch they can come to the library and work on any number of activities.  Each student receives a Makerspace passport in order for them to take the opportunity to try many different activities. There are technology and non-technology activities to do.  Some of the activities include Snap Circuits, Osmo iPad Vocabulary games, FLOORS video game creating, Makey Makey station, Lego Movie Maker (Stop Motion Video), GarageBand music creating, iMovie video creation, Little Bits station and for the classroom.
    Legos In Literature Competition...
Our first annual Lego competition will happen during Celebrate Literacy Week.  Students are encouraged to create a Lego creation using their own Legos based on the setting, plot, or character from their favorite book.  Student creations should be brought to the library no later than Friday, January 20th. There will be winners for each grade 6th, 7th, and 8th.  All creations will be on display in the library January 23-27. Students can pick up their creations on Monday, January 30th.

Great reading GRMS students!
Our students have read 10,338 print books during first semester and 805 ebooks. Don’t forget, if you received new technology devices during the holidays to load the free MackinVIA ebook app and to login using your student number without the “s” and “stingrays” for the password to read books in the GRMS virtual MackinVIA library.

he Gamble Rogers Middle School Robotics Team participated in the First Lego League Competition on Saturday,
December 18th in Jacksonville.  This years theme was Animal Allies.  After the impacts of Hurricane Matthew, the GRMS team chose to focus on saving the honey bee. They worked for months building and programming their robot, visiting local beekeepers for research, completing a project and developing an innovative artificial bee feeder for times when bees lose their natural food source, as well as  writing and performing a skit about saving honey bees.  On Saturday they exhibited excellent teamwork for EIGHT hours.  When all was said and done Gamble Rogers walked away with first place in Robot Performance, scoring the most points with their robot, the first place Champions Award and will now move forward to the regional competition in January at UNF. Gamble Rogers is the first St. Johns County middle school to participate in First Lego League Competitions.
