Broward Health Campuses Go Smoke Free on January 1, 2014

Frank Nask

As of January 1, 2014, all Broward Health campuses, including four hospitals, urgent care centers, community health centers and physician offices, will be completely smoke free.

Smoking will be prohibited in all Broward Health buildings, parking lots, garages and on all grounds. The smoke-free policy applies to all patients, visitors, vendors, medical staff and employees.

"Broward Health's mission is to protect the health of those in our community, while promoting a culture of healthy living for our patients and employees," said Frank Nask, CEO of Broward Health.

Over the past year, Broward Health has increased efforts to promote a smoke-free environment by posting signage, providing free resources and smoking cessation classes to employees. Beginning in November, which is lung cancer awareness month, Broward Health started offering a low-dose CT lung scan for $99 to long-time smokers who meet certain criteria.

Starting on January 1, people who wish to smoke will be asked to leave the Broward Health campuses to do so. "We ask that if anyone leaves our campuses to smoke, please be respectful of our neighbor's homes, businesses and property," said Nask.

 Journey to Magnet Excellence

South Miami Hospital has kicked off its campaign to be re-designated a Magnet hospital for Nursing Excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Magnet Recognition Program´┐Ż recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Consumers rely on Magnet designation - the highest recognition the ANCC can award a hospital - as the ultimate credential for high-quality nursing. South Miami Hospital was recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2004 and again in 2008.

"We are excited to be on this journey to Magnet excellence," said Kathy Sparger, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. "Magnet recognition serves as the gold standard for nursing excellence and the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care. It's not easy to achieve Magnet designation, but the results - improved service, better outcomes, higher productivity and positive financial results - are well worth it."
