Medical School Earns Accreditation

FIU's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine has been granted full accreditation, fulfilling a promise university leaders made to build a public medical school in Miami committed to training a new generation of physicians.

The announcement comes as the Wertheim College of Medicine graduates its first class of students, who are now eligible for medical residency programs.

"FIU can now move forward in providing a high quality medical education," said Albert Maury, chairman of the FIU Board of Trustees. "We are well on our way to building a world-class medical school."

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) awarded full accreditation, saying the College of Medicine had met all of the required steps to become a full-fledged medical school.

Healthcare District of Palm Beach County Retains Ownership of Lakeside Medical Center

Thomas J. Leach

At a public meeting Tuesday, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously that it is in the best interest of the Glades community for the Health Care District to retain ownership and operation of Lakeside Medical Center, Palm Beach County's only public hospital. The vote followed a presentation made by an independent, third-party evaluation firm, Health Management Associates, which found that the estimated fair market financial value of the hospital is zero without Health Care District support.

Lakeside Medical Center is located in Belle Glade and is led by Thomas J. Leach.
