Scientist & Musician
Welcome Clara Salazar, doctoral student studying neuroscience at Upstate Medical University. Last Sunday, Clara played the piano and sang in the choir. Several months ago, she brought her harp and played beautifully at the close of service. Clara grew up singing in church choirs and is glad to have found the choir at Grace. Clara came to her talents naturally: She learned music from her musician-mother and had all her scientific questions answered by her father, who works in emergency medicine.
Clara say she appreciates the walkability of Syracuse, with easy access to coffee shops, restaurants and events like the Latino Festival, which she attended with her brother during a recent visit. Clara, we are so pleased that you found Grace and have joined the church family!

Starting Sept. 13: Two services
Beginning the Sunday after Labor Day, Grace Church will be offering worship services at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. Faith formation will be held at 9:30 a.m. Attendees will discuss the book, "Do I Stay Christian?" All are welcome, whether or not you have read the book.

$15 grocery gift cards needed
The rector's discretionary fund is used primarily to help people get food. Father Steve gives out $15 grocery store gift cards, and it's helpful if the cards are from stores within walking distance of the church (Price Rite and Aldi's.) Can you help by donating gift cards to Grace? Drop them in the collection plate or give them to Father Steve. It's an easy way to help those in need, and helps Father Steve.

Donate backpacks in honor of Rosa & Judith
We are collecting backpacks for students in two Syracuse elementary schools. This annual backpack drive is held in honor of Grace's Rosa Clark, former principal of McKinley-Brighton Elementary, and Judith Brooks, former principal at Dr. King (pictured). | | | Bravo to Shakespeare in the Park for its August performances of "Taming of the Shrew." Held in nearby Thornden Park, the theater company offers shows in June and August. Now thru Oct: Volunteer at Matthew 25 Farm
Matthew 25 Farm grows vegetables and fruit, free of charge, for food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and refugee and veteran groups in five CNY counties.
The farm urgently needs volunteers. Squash, cabbage, green beans, sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and late raspberries need to be harvested. The Rescue Mission's Emergency Shelter is in need of everyday essentials that their clients often go without: soap, body wash, deodorant, razors, lotion, shampoo, socks, underwear, and t-shirts. Please drop off donations at the Rescue Mission, 155 Gifford St.

Six steps to forgiveness
Last Sunday, parishioner/priest Kate Day gave a thoughtful — and useful — sermon based on the Genesis story in which Joseph is sold into slavery by jealous brothers who he eventually saves from famine. Here are six steps to forgiveness, and possibly reconciliation, after domestic violence.
Six Steps
- Establish and maintain safety for the abused.
- Provide safe space for the abused to begin to process feelings.
- Abused can let go of revenge: this is the essence of forgiveness.
- Intervene to protect others from the same abuse.
- Abuser owns their actions, demonstrates changed heart and behavior.
- Abused can offer reconciliation, and their own changed behavior, if needed.
