Last week, I mentioned the concept of Garbage In, Garbage Out. It’s a phrase that rings true in so many facets of business and marketing, and it’s what I’d like to delve into this week. So where do we start?
1) Knowing Your Customers, Competition, and Strengths
If you don’t have a clear picture of who your customers are, who your competitors are, and what sets you apart, it’s hard to hit the mark. Without these insights, your messaging will likely miss the target – and that’s the first step to Garbage In, Garbage Out.
2) Knowing Your Data & Numbers
A solid marketing strategy is based on data and numbers that drive decisions. But if that information is incomplete or off, the decisions made from this data won’t lead to the results you want. In other words, if you don’t have the right input, it’s hard to get the right outcome.
3) Working with AI (Yes, even ChatGPT!)
I'm sure you're sleeping by now - the words AI and ChatGPT probably made you wake up a bit - after all - most of us are obsessed with it.. Garbage in, garbage out applies even more so when using AI. When asking ChatGPT or any AI for help, clear and specific questions yield much more relevant answers. Precise input creates focused, actionable insights.
Imagine two different businesses, both turning to ChatGPT for help with a blog post. The first jumps right in, asking for “a blog about why their services are valuable,” without any background on their brand, their audience, or what action they want readers to take. They end up with a generic article that misses the mark – vague, unfocused, and lacking the specifics that would make it resonate.
The second business, however, takes the time to define their purpose. They identify who their ideal clients are, what challenges those clients face, and what sets their services apart. They clearly outline what they want the blog to achieve, from speaking to their clients’ needs to prompting a specific call to action. As a result, they get a blog post that feels customized, relevant, and impactful. In this case, the input quality changes everything – Garbage In, Garbage Out, or Clarity In, Clarity Out.
For any business, clear messaging and efficient systems start with a little research and careful planning. Knowing the market, understanding the problem you solve, and building one process at a time can make the difference between a system that works like a well-oiled machine and one that’s always breaking down.
We often find that businesses struggle to identify their customers or the core pain points they address. Without these foundational pieces, messaging tends to get lost, websites don’t perform, and sales teams end up working five times harder than they should. But when you take the time to answer these questions, everything else falls into place.
