Message from Garces President, Mr. Kent Hickey

Dear Garces parents/guardians,

We are so thankful for the wonderful beginning of the school year we have experienced thus far and the rich blessing that is our Garces students. I have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with our exceptional young people over these past days – they are so engaging, earnest, and joy-filled. I look forward to getting to know them better throughout this school year and am grateful to you, our parents, for sharing them with us.

I also look forward to the time we will have together this Monday for Back to School Night. I plan to share some thoughts with you that evening regarding my role at the school and a vision for Garces in the years ahead. Related to this, I am including below a link to a draft of my goals for 2022-2023. If you would like to provide feedback, please email me at khickey@garces.org or call my cell phone, 206-660-2339.

Peace and God’s blessings,

Kent Hickey.

Student News

Welcome Rally

Thursday's Welcome Rally was a big success! The Herd is ready to reclaim the #1 student cheering section as our school spirit is loud and proud! The rally had two great performances - one by the cheerleaders and one by the competition dance team. In addition, there were some great games and competitions, with the seniors dominating the tug of war contest. Thank you ASB and Mrs. Thompson for an awesome welcome rally. It was the perfect way to ignite our school spirit on fire!

Let the lessons begin!

In our first year PLTW class, the students started off right away with a "challenge" to build towers out of paper. The challenge develops critical thinking and team work. It is a fun exercise to help freshmen students get to know each other better and open up and make friends in class.

Our AP Chemistry class hit the road running with an experiment on Day One. They are germinating seeds using a variety of techniques. They each feel confident that they have the "winning" experiment and knowing this group, they will all have successful outcomes.

Mass of the Holy Spirit

On Monday, the students will celebrate our traditional Mass of the Holy Spirit with Bishop Brennan. We will celebrate Mass at OLPH Church. Students will walk over and Mass will begin at 11:30 AM.

Seating for guests will be limited due to church capacity.

2022 Garces Memorial Hall of Honor

The Garces Memorial Alumni Board is pleased to announce the inductees for the 2022 Hall of Honor. They are Dr. Tom Berry, Mrs. Joan (Haller) Finch '87, Mr. Ed Hearn, and Mrs. Jenny (Maitia) Poncetta '70. The legacy family who will be presented the 2022 Alumni Award is the Kari & Steve Anderson Family.

The inductees will be honored at the 13th annual Hall of Honor on Thursday, September 8th at Luigi's Warehouse. The evening kicks off with a no-host cocktail reception at 5:30, dinner at 6:30, followed by the awards presentation. Tickets are $100 per person and tables seat 8. For additional information please contact Lou Ann Durrett.

Over the next few weeks, we will highlight each of our inductees.

2022 Hall of Honor Inductee Joan Finch '87

Joan (Haller) Finch graduated from Garces in 1987 and was one of six “Haller” siblings to attend Garces Memorial. Joan’s mother, Helen (Reischmann) Haller was a 1957 graduate, and providing her children a Catholic education was of paramount importance to her. Joan’s siblings are Mary Kay (Haller) Link ’82, the late Barbara (Haller) Boylan Schager ’83, Dianne (Haller) Peranich ’84, Katie (Haller) Metcalf ’90, and Daniel Haller ’91. While at Garces, Joan excelled in volleyball, girls basketball, and track and received all-league honors for athletic abilities. Joan still holds the triple jump record at Garces. Joan was also voted Homecoming Queen her senior year.

Joan’s athletic ability earned her a college scholarship, and she went on to play volleyball at Cal State Bakersfield.  Joan married her husband Jeff in 1989 and they have three wonderful children who are also Garces graduates – Jordan Finch ’10, Justin Finch ’08, and Julianne Finch ’16.

Joan initially came back to Garces to substitute teach and coach volleyball and was hired by Dr. John Ritter in 2004 as a full-time teacher for PE and Health. She also continued to coach volleyball and the track team. Joan was appointed the Garces Athletic Director in 2014.

As the Garces Athletic Director, Joan made huge strides with the CIF and the KHSD. Her fellow AD’s in the CIF Central Section voted Joan as the recipient of the 2016 California State Athletic Directors Association’s Norm MacKenzie Award as the Athletic Director of the Year. Joan hired our first full-time Athletic Trainer and was one of the first to fully utilize the iPad program at Garces. She put Garces Athletics online, making athletic forms, schedules, rosters, release times, game locations, final game scores, etc., accessible to everyone. She took over the Booster Club and set funds aside for the refurbishing of the gym floor and provided new seating for the players and coaches. She was instrumental in the new sod for the football field. She worked closely with the Hail Mary Club on the refurbishment of the Campbell Field House. She easily worked an 80-hour week on behalf of the students, coaches, and families at Garces. When the Garces Alumni Board was re-established in 2009, Joan was the faculty representative for the first three years. Joan is well-respected by all and remains an exceptional ambassador for Garces.

When Joan’s husband Jeff retired in 2017, Joan decided to join him, and she retired from Garces in 2018.

Joan is a faithful Catholic who lives her life with integrity and grace. For several years, Joan continued to volunteer to help Garces and you could often find her helping at cross country and track meets. On occasion, you will still see Joan at a Garces football game or a soccer game with her grandchildren in tow.

Congratulations FFA Alumna!

A HUGE congratulations to Garces Memorial’s very first American Degree recipients, alumnae Catherine Bayne ‘20 and Clarisse Tracy ‘21! They are still making history for our FFA chapter, and we’re so proud!

As the highest degree achievable in the National FFA Organization, the American FFA Degree shows an FFA member’s dedication to his or her chapter and state FFA association. It demonstrates the effort FFA members apply toward their supervised agricultural experience and the outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement they exhibited through their FFA careers.

American FFA Degree recipients show promise for the future and have gone above and beyond to achieve excellence.

Catherine and Clarisse are both attending California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.
