It was an incredible night for the Latina Leaders of Garces at the Union Cemetary for Dia de Los Muertos last week. The Latina Leaders took first place in the altar contest and our very own Apolonia Picazo took first place in the La Catrina contest.
In 1910, La Calavera Catrina was originally a satire sketch created by Mexican cartoon illustrator Jose Guadalupe Posada. Today, it is one of the most important symbols of Dia de Los Muertos. She guides the dead to the living and they celebrate the holiday together. Apolonia spent the day dressed as La Catrina to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. She competes in various competitions internationally and her presence at Garces was important as we celebrate the souls of the deceased.

Veterans Day Celebration
In honor of Veterans Day, Garces Memorial held an assembly today with guest speaker, Perry Finzel, a 17-year Marine veteran and current field representative for Congressman McCarthy's office.
We thank Mr. Finzel and all of the veterans for their service to our country.
Senior Jocelyn Sala and Gigi Antongiovanni then presented Mr. Finzel with a Garces Memorial sweatshirt, and a St. Sebastian Medal as a small token of our gratitude for his sacrifices. St. Sebastian is the patron saint of both soldiers and athletes because of his physical endurance and his energetic way of spreading the faith.
