Thank You, Dr. Gumboc

The Future Medical Professionals Club would like to sincerely thank Dr. Gerard Gumboc for coming to speak to our club about his career as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. He shared very interesting avenues that can be taken as a Doctor of Physical Therapy that were very interesting to our students. Dr. Gumboc is passionate about his work and we are so grateful he took the time to share some of that passion with our Garces community. We are excited to see what his daughter, Guenneviere Gumboc does with her own career in the medical field after Garces. Thank you, Dr. Gumboc!

FFA News

What a way to start off the new year! Garces FFA has kicked off the year with community service, a successful competition, and our first St. Isidore's Booster Club Fundraiser. We are so excited to see what amazing things our chapter will accomplish!

On Thursday, January 18th, our leadership team traveled to the Pumpkin Center and Old River communities on the south side of town. We collected illegally dumped litter in the farmland of that area and were shocked at how much trash there was! Our team found furniture, a vacuum cleaner, a mattress and even a TV! We are looking forward to doing more farmland cleanups in the future, so please let us know if there is any trash that needs to be cleaned. If you see it, tell us!

The Kern Inyo Speaking Competition took place at North High and we had 13 eager competitors. The Speaking competition has a few different categories, such as Job Interview, Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Prepared and Creed. A lot of preparation and memorization goes into a competition like this and we are so proud of our members! Five of our competitors took home medals and plaques with:

Creed

2nd Place: Lucia White

4th Place: Gia Wattenbarger

6th Place: Charlie Anspach

Job Interview

2nd Place: Analeina Lugo

Extemporaneous

5th Place: Luke Zunino

Congratulations to all who competed!

Put on your best rhinestones and cowboy boots for our first ever Jeans and Jewels St Isidore's Booster Fundraiser! Get ready for a night of fun with auctions, raffles, and more! We are raising funds to support our chapter, and hopefully send a group of our most involved members to the National Convention next year. 2023 BVarsity Fall Sports All-Area

The Bakersfield Californian and its prep sports section, BVarsity, has began rolling out their 2023 Fall Sports All-Area teams, and Garces Memorial is once again well represented.

On Tuesday, six members of the girls golf team were honored with Malia Giumarra and Ashlee Kresha both named first team after advancing to the CIF SoCal regional tournament.

Wednesday, nine girls tennis players were honored, led by Kelsey Abraham and Jocie Sala named co-Players of the Year. This is the first player of the year honor for Sala, who was named as part of the doubles team of the year three times. Abraham graduates as three-time player of the year, an award that has been given to a Garces Memorial girls tennis player for seven consecutive seasons and 10 of the past 12, dating back to 2012.

The water polo All-Area teams were announced on Thursday with a grand total of 18 boys and girls water polo players from Garces honored. That list is led by Offensive Players of the Year (Johnny Mendiburu and Eden Coughran), Defensive Players of the Year (Johnny Starr and Katie McCarthy) and Goalkeepers of the Year (Levi McKay and Marie Zaninovich). Since BVarsity began running All-Area in 2021, Garces Memorial has earned all the player of the year awards.

Both water polo coaches, Spencer Kerwin (girls) and Hal Goulter (boys), were named coaches of the year.

Check Bakersfield.com or the Garces Athletics social media accounts (@GarcesAthletics) for cross country, volleyball and football that will be release this weekend.

Student Gala Contest

Ends February 16th

Our students are participating in our Gala Contest. Each homeroom chose a theme for their class and they will be gathering items to create amazing baskets for the Gala Auction! If your family has access to something that would be a fabulous auction item, please consider donating it. Your student will still receive credit even if the item does not match the theme. For instance, if you have access to a personal service, a vacation home, gift cards, or tickets to a professional sporting event - please consider donating them as those are always a hot ticket! If you can send a receipt with items you have purchased - we would greatly appreciate it. Or you can make a cash donation and the homeroom teacher can use it to add to their basket. If we get doubles - it makes it easy for us to make a quick return and replace it with something else for the basket. All donated items can be turned in to your student's homeroom teacher or the front office. The students are competing for a “Ditch Day” – the winning class will get a field trip on Thursday, April 4th, to the McDermont Field House! If you have any questions, please contact Jenny Asaro at 32702578 ext. 160.
