70th Anniversary - #22
Message from Vince Fanucchi
Garces Historian & Archivist
"Hypnotic Frenzy" at 60s Dances
In the early 1960s the local high school administrators had concerns about a problem they were all facing at their campus dances. Their dilemma was an outbreak of "hypnotic frenzies" on the dance-floor (as illustrated by this photo from the 1965 homecoming dance), caused by the popularity of new music from artists such as the Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones and James Brown, to name but a few.
At a hastily convened meeting to address the problem they declared that "high school was not the place to allow a type of dancing which could only be seen nowhere else but in a big city honky-tonk bar."
Found most objectionable were "songs characterized by a loud over-powering beat and little or no melody, producing a kind of hypnotic frenzy in the dancers, causing them to jump, scream and shout along with the music."
They finally decided that the solution to the frenzies was to play a larger variety of music at their dances (including waltzes), thereby "allowing the students the opportunity to display their more cultured dancing skills."
Fifty years later, we will still be closely monitoring the students for any new outbreaks of jumping, screaming or shouting at this weekend's Winter Formal.

Congratulations Mock Trial!
2nd Place in Kern County Competition
Last Saturday was Super Saturday for Mock Trial. They went into the competition undefeated and came out with a 2nd place finish! We are beyond proud of them. They first battled Liberty, won the verdict, and won on points from the scoring judges. Rams were 3-0 going into the final round. It all came down to a battle against Stockdale, who was also 3-0. At the end of the trial, the presiding
judge awarded the verdict to Garces, however, Stockdale scored more points from the scoring judges and won the round and the competition. After the first mock trial, Liberty voted Alfred Agbayani as Best Attorney and Nick Oh as Best Performer. Stockdale voted Moises Gonzelez as Best Attorney and Victor Agbayani as Best Performer. At the awards ceremony, Nick Oh and Alfred Agbayani were named to the Mock Trial Honor Court. Members of the Mock Trial Team are: Matthew Castanares, Setareh Etesham, Joyce Hernandez, Nick Oh, Farah Abumeri, Alfred Agbayani, Riley Pisano, Victor Agbayani, Kelly McGrath, Mimi Raytis, Michaelted Acosta, Ethan Gandola, Zach Buckey, Luke Jamieson, and Moises Gonzalez. The club moderator is Ms. Nicole Bianco. The amazing and dedicated attorneys who coached the team are Mr. Dan Raytis, Mr. H.A. Sala, Mr. Antonio Lopez-Hutchison, and Mr. Scott Belden. Our team was well prepared and well coached. We are very grateful to our attorney coaches who volunteered countless hours to prepare our students.

Garces Basketball 70th Anniversary Celebration -
Friday, February 2nd
We would like to welcome all Garces basketball alumni to our varsity boys basketball game Friday, February 2nd at 6:30pm. Come cheer on our Rams as they take on the Centennial Golden Hawks! We will be honoring Gino Lacava and the 2005 Valley Championship Boys Basketball Team at the game.
Gino Lacava is the winningest basketball coach in the history of the CIF Central Section. During his 20-year career (1993-4 thru 2012-13) he led Garces to 11 league titles and 10 Valley Championships in 12 trips to the finals. At one time, his teams also qualified to 3 straight Southern California finals.
Garces Basketball History: The 2005 Valley Championship team had a 16-7 record (5-3 in the SEYL). Their biggest game of the year was in the Valley Finals against diocesan rival, San Joaquin Memorial. SJM had three future NBA first-round draft picks on their team.
CalHiSports.com
picked them to win by 24 points. In spite of that, Lacava's Rams never trailed in the game and pulled off what is still considered the biggest upset in the 100+ year history of the Central Section.

Weekly Message from Ms. Myka Peck
Principal
Dear Garces Families,
Next week we will be celebrating the traditions of being a Catholic School. Catholic Schools Week is a time to reflect on all the constituents that make Garces Memorial High School the premier high school in Bakersfield.
Throughout the week we will open our campus to all our Garces families. I hope you can be a part of this special celebration. We will also take time next week to thank our students; they are Garces Memorial High School. Our student's love for their school was on full display last week during our Bring a Friend to School Day. Over 100 Garces students welcomed their friends to our campus for the day. It was wonderful to see how proud our students are of their school. We are all marketers of Garces Memorial High School and our students are our best-selling point. They are the product of our collaboration and we as a staff are fortunate to be a part of their journey.
Additionally, I must share how proud I am of the Garces Mock Trial team. This program has been resurrected with a force to be reckoned within the community. As you will see in the newsletter, the Mock Trial team received 2nd place on Super Saturday where we competed against schools that are very established. The commitment shown by all our students, moderators, and volunteers is commendable and because of this dedication we are looking forward to their success in the next school year.
I am excited to invite to you to our annual Gala. Over 70 years of faith, academics, and excitement have graced the Garces Memorial High School campus. We, as a school community, get to be a part of this celebration. I know you all have fond memories as a past student, or as current parents, at Garces. Attending Gala is a great way to show your passion for Garces Memorial High School. It will be an evening full of memories and the projection of where Garces Memorial High School will be in the future. I know our volunteers have been working countless hours to make you proud of the school we all love and cherish. A special thank you to this year's co-chairs Cindy Meek, Monica Sacco, and Staci Allison. I pray that you will attend and show your support to the school on the hill that has made so many successful young men and women. I look forward to seeing you there.
Lastly, we will be doing a pre-registration this year. It will take place on your March billing cycle. The fee will be $100 per student which will be removed from your registration fee. This will help us to prepare for the upcoming school year.
Looking forward to seeing you next week!
Myka Peck
