Senior Sunrise

Senior Sunrise was Thursday morning and it was another amazing day full of blessings on our campus.  Msgr. Craig Harrison joined the students to watch the sun come up.  He shared with them some wonderful reflections about gratitude, making smart choices during their senior year, and for them to know that God loves them. He brought a special prayer card for each senior and, as a group, they prayed out loud, in unison, with one voice.  It was a special moment for the Class of 2019. A big shout out and thank you to Msgr. Harrison!  We love having him on campus. After the sun came up, the seniors moved to the parking lot and decorated their parking spots.  And a big thank you to Ms. Witwer and Mr. Cobb for organizing a wonderful event for our seniors.

Garces Service Projects

Our teachers selected their service projects, the students signed up, and the first service project meeting was last week!  Each month, there is time set aside for the teachers and students to meet to plan and implement their projects.  Some have gotten off to a fast start while others are still in the collaboration and planning stages.  Everyone is excited to make a positive impact on our community and to share our compassion with others in most need.

On Tuesday, the "Ewe Can Too" Service Project began making blankets for premature babies who are in the NICUs at Valley Children's Hospital and in the Lauren Small Children's Center at Memorial Hospital.  The "Love Bags" Service Project also met.  The students made over 150 sack lunches for the less fortunate who depend on a daily meal at the St. Vincent de Paul Center. The Love Bags are made possible by the generosity of our parents who provide the supplies and transport the Love Bags to SVDP.

Look for more service project updates in future newsletters.

UC APPLICATION WORKSHOP FOR SENIORS
The counselors will be hosting a UC application workshop next Wednesday, August 29th at 2:10 pm in the Counseling Center. They will walk students through the entire process.  Students should leave with a completed application.

JUNIOR CLASS VISITS
Mrs. Limi and Mrs. Restivo visited the junior classes this week and shared the following information with the students:

  • During the junior year, it is very important to begin building a college list. A great place to start is by using the College Search feature on Family Connection. Once a student finds a college that fits his/her criteria, add them to the College's I'm Thinking About section.
  • Counselors will be meeting with the juniors and their families for individual college advising appoints in the late fall, early spring. During these personalized meetings, they will review transcripts and go over college GPA, discuss college admissions requirements, college entrance tests (SAT/ACT), financial aid, and important deadlines. They also want to make sure students have a balanced list of prospective colleges, so they will review each student's college list with him/her.
  • Now is the time to prepare to take the SAT and ACT. Registration dates and deadlines can be found online at www.sat.org/register and www.actstudent.org . Juniors should take both the SAT and the ACT and generally begin testing in the spring.  The last PSAT will be given on October 10th.
  • College admissions representatives will be on campus to meet with interested students. During these visits, the admissions counselor will discuss the application process, requirements to attend, college majors, financial aid and student life. The complete list of college visits can be found on Family Connection and students must register to attend online. Students are also required to get permission from their teacher if they will be missing class.

SOPHOMORE CLASS VISITS
Mrs. Limi and Mrs. Restivo visited the sophomore classes this week and shared the following information with the students:

  • They will hold monthly "college talks" during the enrichment period. Some of the topics they will discuss are the UC and CSU admissions process, how to build a college list, college entrance testing (SAT and ACT) and so much more. The first one will be on August 23rd from 1:35 to 2:25 in the Counseling Center.
  • The sophomore year starts the UC and Cal State GPA. Grades are important so students were encouraged to check NetClassroom often.
10th Grade College Talk

10th Grade College Talk with the counselors was a huge success on Thursday, August 23rd. Mrs. Limi, Mrs. Restivo, & Mrs. Poochigian had over 55 students and parents in attendance in room 1. The students and parents learned about Naviance, the different college search tools, and building their college list. The next 10th Grade College Talk will be on Thursday, September 27th. The counselors will discuss the University of California admissions process.

We made over $10,000 and all the funds will go towards paying for the much needed Student Store remodel - which is almost done.

Please stop by the Student Store the next time you are on campus to see how nice it looks. Mr. Geissel will also have it open from 5:00 - 6:15 PM during Back to School Night on Monday.  If the item you want is not in stock, he will gladly take custom orders so you can have the Garces gear you want to wear to support the school.

MESSAGE FROM THE MOST REVEREND
ARMANDO X. OCHOA
BISHOP, DIOCESE OF FRESNO

The breaking news of the scandal created by Cardinal McCarrick; the Incomprehensible findings of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury involving six dioceses; and the exposed intolerable systemic immorality that sustained the abuse of countless children demands a response. I agree that it is the episcopate that must answer this call to action in a practical way that is rooted in the tenets of our faith as Catholic Christians. I look forward to the opportunity to address this grievous and detrimental reality that is overshadowing us, along with my brother bishops.

I stand firm in my conviction that all clergy must live out their lives as ordained ministers with integrity. As bishop, I have fully accepted my responsibility to address any serious matter that knowingly puts at risk any of the souls entrusted to my pastoral care and will continue to do so.

One of my greatest concerns is the culture of secrecy that exists in many dioceses among the clergy and even among some of the laity who feel that they need to protect the Church at all costs. This must be addressed more effectively. To remain silent and abandon victims when they need their faith community the most is indefensible.

I know that this massive wave of scandal is hurting many people. I encourage you to see this as a sign that God is purifying the Church. I will do all that I can to cooperate with this healing process and to work towards restoring trust. I encourage you to continue your good works and not be distracted away from the needs of the poor, weak and vulnerable in our midst. We must work through this together, while taking care of the day to day needs of the people we serve.

During the first week of September our Diocese will be undergoing our annual Safe Environment audit. I look forward to sharing the results with you. In the meantime, I ask all clergy, religious and lay leaders in my Diocese to be sensitive to those who are experiencing a crisis of faith as a result of this monumental betrayal of trust. Together, we can heal and build a Church that faithfully lives out its call to be disciples of hope.

May God bless you and give you peace.
