On Wednesday this week, we celebrated the feast day of St. James of Jerusalem. This St. James is also commonly known as “James the Just” and is identified with James, the brother of Jesus. It’s easy to get confused because there are a lot of James’s in the New Testament – there is “James the Greater” who was one of Jesus’ first apostles and one of the “Zebedee brothers,” and “James the Lesser” who was also one of the original twelve! The James we celebrate this week is best known, however, not just for being Jesus’ brother and the author of the Epistle of James but also a significant leader in the earliest incarnations of the church in Jerusalem.
Tradition recognizes James, along with Peter, as one of the original bishops of the church. The stories of him in the New Testament, along with the writings in the epistle attributed to him, suggest that he was on the conservative side of the new Christian movement, and sought to maintain the Jewish identify of what was being called “The Way” at the time. His position of power and influence meant that he was at the center of the debates between Peter and Paul about whether Gentiles should be admitted to fellowship with Jewish believers.
It was James who brokered the compromise solution that welcomed a whole new culture of people into the church. He made space for those from outside his own tradition, while still holding onto the essentials of his group’s cultural identity. In a time such as ours, where even civil debate between differing factions seems to have fallen by the wayside, James provides us a model of how the church can lead the way in showing how God’s love breaks through our differences and brings peace and reconciliation.
James was also known as a man of deep devotion– some stories say that he spent days or even weeks on his knees in prayer. The collect for St. James’ feast day says: Grant, O God, that, following the example of your servant James the Just, brother of our Lord, your Church may give itself continually to prayer and to the reconciliation of all who are at variance and enmity. I believe that it is this same sort of spiritual discipline that is needed for any of us to meet the challenges of being peacemakers in our world, and James provides us with an excellent example.

All Saints' Sunday
Sunday, November 5th
On All Saints' Sunday, November 5th, we will join Christians throughout the world to celebrate the Blessed Communion of All the Saints', of which a part is remembering our departed loved ones. During our service, the names of our loved ones, who are now a part of the saints in light, will be remembered, connecting us to all those gathered around that great cloud of witnesses.
If you wish to have the name(s) of saints who have died since the last All Saints' Day (i.e., since November 1, 2022) remembered during the service, please provide the names via the form here, complete the PDF form here and bring it to church this Sunday or email it to the church office, holycross@holycrosscarlsbad.org, or complete a form at church this Sunday. All forms must be received by NOON, this Tuesday October 31, in order for names to be included in our service on November 5th.
We will also be setting up a Table of Remembrance for our beloved departed saints (whether they have died in the last year or in previous years). Please plan to bring pictures and other items to help remember these family members or friends – we will be providing flowers and candles to help decorate the table.

Garden Blessing this Sunday, October 29
This Sunday, October 29th, we will have a special garden blessing as part of our Sunday liturgy. We are in the process of transitioning our garden plot from warm season to cool season veggies, and we need your help! If you have seeds or starts of the fall/winter plants to contribute - lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, radishes, peas, celery, parsley - so that we can continue to have a bountiful harvest of fresh vegetables and herbs to share with our congregation and our friends at JCo, please bring them to church this Sunday.
If you have any questions, please speak with any of the members of our Garden Ministry – Wendy Morray, Sue Baas, or Grant Ford (Judy Cater is also a member of the team but is out of town currently).

October Outreach
Wounded Warrior Battalion (West)
at Camp Pendleton
Twice a month our ministry volunteers purchase, pick-up, deliver, and serve healthy snacks to members of the Wounded Warrior Battalion (West) at Camp Pendleton on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday's each month. They spend approximately an hour after serving the snacks participating in conversation with members of the battalion and staff. This ministry provides a vital part of the process in the care for wounded, ill, and injured Marines and Sailors.
These snacks that are served by this ministry are purchased through gracious donations from members of our congregation and are supplemented by local merchants who generously support us with additional needed food donations. We focus on healthy food items as a way to enhance the nourishment and health of the recovering Marines and Sailors, and as an example of the life long food choices they have for themselves and their families.
If you would like to support our Wounded Warrior ministry with a donation to help purchase water and healthy snacks, please make checks out to Holy Cross and note “Wounded Warrior Ministry” on the memo line or online via Zelle or Faithstreet please note “Wounded Warrior Ministry” on the memo/what's this for line.
If you wish to participate in our visits please contact Tom Mauro.
You may read more about this ministry here.
