A Century of Wonder, Rooted in Nature

The first, oldest and only award-winning public garden in Vero Beach.

Pirate & Fairy Festival, Saturday, May 9th

Few days are as enchanting as McKee's Annual Pirate & Fairy Festival. Now in its 15th year, young pirates, fairies and adventurers are invited to arrive at the Garden dressed in their fairy finery and swashbuckling pirate best for a magical day in the historic jungle. An added attraction is the notorious pirate Black Bart's famous Scorpion ship which came to rest during a great hurricane in the early 1700s in the branches of a mighty banyan tree (or so the story goes). Children may still discover it hidden deep within the Garden as a nod to Florida's famous Treasure Coast.

Families will discover whimsical fairy encounters, pirate adventures, musical entertainment and the remarkable sculptures of FLORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN, now in its final weeks. Enjoy lunch in the Garden Cafe before exploring the monumental origami-inspired artworks tucked throughout the Garden's winding paths, adding one final layer of wonder to this enchanting celebration of imagination, history, and discovery.

Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10th

Celebrate Mother's Day surrounded by the beauty and tranquility of McKee. Stroll through the Garden's lush tropical landscapes, experience the final weeks of FLORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN, enjoy lunch in the Garden Cafe and create lasting memories with the mothers, grandmothers and loved ones who help life bloom. Members are free. Visitors will receive one complimentary admission with each paid admission and might consider purchasing the gift of a commemorative Centennial tote bag to carry the day's memories home in, available in the Garden Gift & Book Shop.

Waterlily Workshop, Wednesday, May 13th

McKee's aquatics expert, Nikki Wojtowicz, journeyed from Massachusetts to Hawaii, where she propagated and cared for palms, to Puerto Rico, where she cultivated coffee, and ultimately to McKee, where she has been instrumental in rebuilding the Garden's astonishing legacy of waterlilies. A popular teacher at McKee's Annual Waterlily Festival, Nikki has designed a workshop for the timid and the curious waterlily enthusiasts among you. Entitled Oasis in a Pot: Building a Florida Native Aquatic Rest Stop, Nikki's workshop will focus on creating a Florida native aquatic container garden, specifically designed as a functional "rest stop" for native insects and local wildlife. Participants will learn to build a miniature wetland that provides water, nectar, and habitat for pollinators like butterflies, bees, and dragonflies. Advance registration is required. For more information and to register, please visit McKee's website.

Royal Horticultural Society Registers McKee Orchid

McKee recently learned that the Phalaenopsis McKee Botanical Garden Centenary (pictured) has been accepted for registration by the Royal Horticultural Society, the first time in more than 50 years that a McKee orchid has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.

As the Garden celebrates its centennial, the registration serves as a lasting tribute to McKee's venerable orchid legacy. Registered by Orchid Curator, Luis Ortiz, the orchid honors the Garden's historic reputation for orchid cultivation, which gained international acclaim in the mid-20th century under founder Arthur G. McKee and his hand-picked orchidologist from the Missouri Botanical Garden, David Fairburn.

The orchid will become part of the Garden's developing breeding program, an important step in rebuilding McKee's orchid collection to the prominence and distinction it once enjoyed.

Eco-Internship Triumphantly Concluded

From Classroom to Canopy

Advanced and gifted sixth grade students from Gifford Middle School just concluded a four-month program of weekly instruction which expanded their understanding of botany, ecology and environmental stewardship through McKee's Eco-Internship program. Through hands-on learning experiences both in the classroom and throughout McKee's historic landscape, students explored plant science, ecosystems and the interconnected relationship between people and the natural world. A recent educational visit to Bok Tower Gardens concluded their studies, and exposed students to another nationally significant Florida garden and deepening their appreciation for horticulture, conservation and the importance of preserving cultural landscapes for future generations.

Patrick Merrell Award Nominee

Award-winning cartoonist, comic book artist and The New York Times crossword puzzle constructor (one of many), Patrick Merrell, has been designing McKee's exhibition Fun Packs since 2017. This year, for the third time, Patrick has been named one of three finalists for the National Cartoonists Society Variety Entertainment Divisional Award for his whimsical and imaginative FLORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN Fun Pack.

Beloved by children, and plenty of adults, McKee's educational Fun Packs offer a playful way to explore the Garden's history, exhibitions, and living collections, reflecting one of the many ways McKee engages young visitors through creativity, discovery and learning within its historic jungle landscape.
