Kerry's Tips of the Week
Hauntingly Beautiful Foliage
October is here and with Halloween just a few weeks away, I thought it would be fun to look at some plants with "scary" black leaves.

While truly black leaves are quite rare, there are a number of choices with extremely dark purple, brown or green leaves that will make an elegant statement in gardens or containers. Read on to discover some of my favorites...

Fall Fertilizing Guide
When leaves and flowers begin to die back in the fall, it will look like all plant activity has finished for the season. However, cooler temperatures and shorter days send signals to plants to slow down on the above ground growth and concentrate on what's underground.

With an inordinate amount of activity taking place in the roots, fall is the opportune time to fertilize. It may sound odd to feed plants now, but an ample supply of fertilizer in the fall will give plants a head start when it's time to grow in the spring.

Follow these tips to get started...

Support the Yarmouth Community Garden
Estabrook's is a proud supporter of the Yarmouth Community Garden (YCG) and we'd like to highlight two October events as they celebrate the close of their gardening season -- Harvest Dinner at Home and Paint the Garden, their first on-line art auction.
In 2020, the Community Garden volunteers have grown and donated over 3000 pounds of organic vegetables to Yarmouth Food Pantry and other neighbors in need -- a mission even more important and valued this year.
Harvest Dinner at Home

The Harvest Dinner at Home includes the garden's own marinara sauce, made in partnership with Mama Mo's, artisan bread, a box of pasta, and parmesan cheese. This dinner for two, for $20, must be ordered in advance through Yarmouth Community Services (YCS) at 207-846-2406 or on-line at yarmouthcommunityservices.com. Dinners can be picked up between 1 and 5pm on October 17th at the Railroad Square Pavilion on Main Street in Yarmouth. Homemade pesto can be added, by donation, when dinners are picked up.
Paint the Garden Art Auction

The Paint the Garden art auction is a unique collaboration of 17 local artists and Yarmouth Community Garden. The artists were invited to paint something in the garden that inspired them, and agreed to donate 50% of the proceeds from each painting to YCG. The paintings will be on display at the Yarmouth History Center now through October 16th. The art auction closes Saturday, October 17th at 5pm.
