Garden Street Safety Improvement Project

Installation Update

Porter Mobile.jpg

Good afternoon -

Due to the rain, the City of Cambridge's installation schedule for the Garden Street Safety Improvement Project has changed slightly. We now expect to switch to one-way operation between Huron Avenue and Concord Avenue on the morning of Friday, October 28.

As part of this project:

  • Part of Garden Street (between Huron Avenue and Concord Avenue) will become one-way eastbound (toward Cambridge Common/Harvard Square).
  • We will add separated bike lanes in both directions between Huron Avenue and Mason Street/Berkeley Street.
  • We will improve crosswalks.
  • We will make changes to parking and loading.

Our Work So Far

Since the rain prevented our crews from making changes to major road markings, we started the week by prepping sign posts and traffic signals.

One-Way Conversion

Part of Garden Street between Huron Avenue and Concord Avenue will change from two-way for people driving to one-way (eastbound, toward Harvard Square). We expect this change to occur very early in the morning on Friday, October 28

We are informing people driving about this change with large message boards near the project area and with temporary in-road signage.

Timeline

We will start by adding new signals, updating metal street signs, and adding new major markings on the road. We will complete the project by adding bicycle stencils, flex posts, and colored surface treatments in early November.

Parking Restrictions

Temporary parking restrictions will be in place during this work. We will post signs with these restrictions at least 48 hours in advance.
