Monitoring Coronavirus
The Garland Health Department has received reports of 159 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents, as well as five deaths.  The City will update our posted case numbers each afternoon after 2 p.m. Check the  Dallas County website for county-wide updates.

You can subscribe to receive updates at GarlandTX.gov. If you have not yet set up an account, there is a "Create an Account" link at the very top of the page, above the navigation bar. Click that to create your account.  Click on the green "Notify Me" button to get the subscription page. You have several subscription options. The first section is Alerts. The second section is News Flash. COVID-19 Updates is the second option under News Flash.

During an April 2 Emergency Meeting of the Garland City Council, City Manager Bryan Bradford recommended additional changes to City operations and services through April 30 to further protect residents and employees from the spread of COVID-19. These changes were unanimously approved by the City Council and are summarized at GarlandTX.gov.

While most City facilities are now closed to the public, City departments can still be reached by phone or email. Visit the Staff Directory for contact information. Garland offers an information line, 972-205-3900, to help connect residents to health resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Call your primary care physician first for medical and testing advice.

VA North Texas Health Care System Acquires Garland Hospital Facility
The VA North Texas Health Care System has officially taken possession of the former Garland-Baylor, Scott & White hospital located at 2300 Marie Curie Drive. The facility will now be known as Garland VA Medical Center.

In a news release issued April 6, VA North Texas Health Care System announced the facility will serve as an outpatient and specialty care clinic for some of the 184,000 North Texas veterans enrolled in VA health care. Due to the increasing number of veterans needing care for COVID-19, the facility will initially be stood up as an in-patient overflow unit with a capacity for 100 beds. Learn more.

How many of you have filled out the 2020 census? Take a look at how Garland is doing compared to other North Texas cities. We are doing well, but let's get that number up! 

Fill yours out today! It only takes about 10 minutes to answer 10 questions, and t here are several ways to complete the one-page form remotely: online, mail or by phone. It is provided in numerous languages, and your data is confidential. 
You should have received an invitation to respond online in mid-March, and a paper questionnaire will be mailed this month.

Garland Goodness

Important COVID-19 Information Regarding Your Utility Bill
The City of Garland will work with customers during these difficult times, and will not disconnect electric or water service for late or lack of utility bill payment. 

Customers should contact Utility Customer Service at 972-205-2671 or  CustServ@GarlandTX.gov to discuss their situation. Please include your service address and account number in any correspondence.

Duckworth Utility Services Building (217 N. Fifth St.) is closed through Saturday, May 9.  Utility and Tax payments will be accepted via the Drive-Thru Payment Center at 717 W. State St. (at West State Street and North Glenbrook Drive) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Other utility payment options  are also available.
Transfer Station and Recycle Center Have Room for Your Excess
During this crisis, our Environmental Waste Services crews will continue to provide our residents the best service by maintaining regular residential, brush and bulky, and recyclable collection schedules. We realize as the shelter in place order continues, some of you may be collecting or producing more trash and recyclables than usual.
If your carts are overflowing, you can always drop off any excess trash and recyclables at our Recycling Center and Transfer Station at 1434 Commerce St. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Residents are encouraged to avoid trips to the C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill at this time.

City Council will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, April 13, for updates on the COVID-19 situation. 

Plan Commission
April 13
The Garland Plan Commission meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. 

Due to COVID-19 public gathering restrictions, both the City Council and Plan Commission meetings will be virtual.  You can watch the meetings onlineThe virtual meeting link will be included in the individual meeting agenda. You may participate by telephone. Dial-in numbers will be posted with the virtual meeting information.  View agendas  at GarlandTX.gov and be sure to click the "subscribe" button to receive notifications when meeting agendas are posted.

Garland Animal Services is still open to the public. Please call 972-205-3570 to make an appointment before entering the shelter. Due to high call volumes, we ask that you leave a voicemail with your name, phone number and the ID of the animal you are interested in. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
