Garland Animal Services Launches Stickers to Help Shelter Dogs
Garland Animal Services is excited to partner with local businesses to help our furry friends find forever homes.

Stop by Intrinsic Smokehouse & Brewery, 509 W. State St. in Downtown, to collect your limited edition can featuring one of our adoptable dogs.

Scan the QR code on the sticker to find out more about adoptable dogs currently at the shelter. And stay tuned to learn how you can get the other limited edition stickers — collect all four and win a prize. Watch the video to find out more!

Fire Department 2020 Award Winners Announced
The Garland Fire Department’s 2020 "Of The Year" award winners were recognized at a ceremony Aug. 4 at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center.

Congratulations to the following award recipients:
  • Friend of the Fire Department: Gary Holcomb – City of Garland Purchasing Department
  • Staff Person of the Year: Firefighter Danny Caldwell
  • Officer of the Year: Capt. Ron Short
  • Paramedic of the Year: All Garland Fire Paramedics - for truly outstanding service and response to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Firefighter of the Year: Lt. Michael Clark

Recent promotions, new recruits and 2020 retirees were also honored at the awards presentation.
COVID-19 Vaccines Available at Pop-Up Vaccination Clinic Tuesday, Aug. 10, and at Garland's Public Health Clinic
The Garland Health Department will host a vaccination clinic from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.

You can also get the COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment at our Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver Drive, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

During the month of July, 92.4% of reported cases in Garland were unvaccinated and 96.4% of hospitalizations were unvaccinated.

Nationally, vaccinated people are eight times less likely to get COVID-19, and 25 times less likely to be hospitalized or die from COVID-19.

Free Classic Movie at the Plaza Theatre

View a screening of the 1961 classic "Blue Hawaii" at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.

Elvis Presley stars in this romantic comedy musical. After arriving back in Hawaii from the Army, Chad Gates (Elvis Presley) defies his parents' wishes for him to work at the family business and instead goes to work as a tour guide at his girlfriend's agency.

Garland at the Olympics Exhibit at the Landmark Museum

Join in the Olympic fun! Visit the Garland Landmark Museum, located at 393 N. Sixth St. in Downtown, and see the newest exhibit featuring Garlandites who have participated in the Olympics.

The exhibit is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Saturday, Aug. 28.

GP&L EnergySaver Program Offers Utility Bill Credits
Garland Power & Light’s EnergySaver Program provides utility bill credits for qualifying energy efficiency upgrades.

New air conditioning may qualify for a bill credit of up to $800, depending on efficiency and type of unit. Home weatherization upgrades, such as ENERGY STAR® windows and doors, window solar screens or film, and ceiling insulation can also help you conserve energy and earn credits.

City Council Meetings
Aug. 14, 16, 17 and 19
The Garland City Council will hold a special Work Session on the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

The regularly scheduled Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St. A public hearing on the proposed budget for 2021-22 will be included.

There will be an additional special Work Session on the proposed budget at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St. The proposed budget is available at

Cultural Arts Commission Grant Applications
Sept. 17
Applications for the Garland Cultural Arts Commission's 2021-22 Grant Program may be picked up beginning Monday, Aug. 2, at the Granville Arts Center Box Office, 300 N. Fifth St., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applications are due to the Granville Arts Center Friday, Sept. 17. Follow-up interviews will take place Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Granville Arts Center. For more information, call 972-205-2780.
COVID-19 Updates
As of Monday, Aug. 2, the Garland Health Department has received reports of 770 active cases out of 29,694 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 458 deaths. The City updates its posted case numbers each Monday.
Fight the Bite
The City of Garland reminds residents to protect themselves against mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile Virus by limiting outdoor activity during evening and early morning hours and wearing light-colored, long-sleeve clothing while outdoors. Remember also to eliminate any standing water on your property as this is where mosquitoes lay eggs. Learn more at
