Garland Board & Volunteer Fair: Feb. 26
Enjoy an evening of networking and conversation with more than 30 of Garland's nonprofit, civic and community organizations from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

These organizations are seeking both volunteers and/or open board vacancies, and you'll have the opportunity to learn more about helping serve the Garland community.

Garland Library Introduces Online Magazines
In addition to thousands of downloadable e-books and audio books, Garland library patrons can now download issues of selected magazines from the library's popular digital books service.
 
The online magazine collection includes 75 titles on topics such as news, business, exercise and lifestyle subjects.

Cat Castles
2:30 p.m. Feb. 16
South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.

Families can build their own cat castles for their favorite felines. Cat castles are structures built for cats to climb, jump and play on. The cat castles in this maker event will be made from cardboard boxes and other recycled materials. Decorating materials will be provided as well.

Registration is required to attend this event and is limited to 24 participants. Registration begins Feb. 2. Call  972-205-3931 to register.
Teens Craft for a Cause
6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 
Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Teens ages 13 to 17 can give back to the community and earn volunteer hours through the Garland Library's Craft for a Cause program. 
Teens can learn how to make dog toys using old T-shirts and catnip toys using socks, then continue making the toys at home and earn 30 minutes of volunteer time for each toy they return to the Central Library. All toys will be donated to the Garland Pawsibilities animal shelter. Call  972-205-2516 for more information.
Free Movie at the Plaza Theatre Feb. 9  
Enjoy a free screening of the film It Happened One Night  at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.

The City of Garland presents several free movies throughout the year at the Plaza Theatre in Downtown Garland. 

All are first-come, first-served general admission shows. No tickets are required. Popcorn, candy, soda and water are available for $2 each.

SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training: Feb. 16
The 2019 severe weather season is around the corner. Are you prepared to recognize clues that suggest large hail, flash flooding or a possible tornado?

The National Weather Service will host its free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.  This training is free and open to the public. 

In the event of a government shutdown, this training will be canceled. The National Weather Service will provide updates here and on social media.
Your Voice Teen Town Hall 
Teens ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to attend the Town Hall event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 16, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.,  to have their voices heard, share ideas, get involved and make a difference.

Topics at the event will include: teen/police relations, education, teen health, active transportation, media and homelessness.

Following the event, members of the Garland Youth Council will head to the Downtown Garland Square to have lunch, shop and play games. All teens are encouraged to attend.

District 4 Town Hall Meeting
Feb. 12
City Council Member Jim Bookhout will host a District 4 Town Hall Meeting in conjunction with the La Prada 8 Crime Watch group at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Audubon Recreation Center, 342 W. Oates Road. Learn more.

City Council Election Filing Deadline
Feb. 15
Interested Garland voters may file for a place on the May 4, 2019, City Officer General Election ballot for the offices of Mayor and Council Districts 3, 6, 7 and 8.  Anyone interested in candidacy must make an appointment with the City Secretary's Office to submit their application for a place on the ballot before the filing deadline of Friday, Feb. 15. Candidate packets are available online here For more information and updates, continue to watch the City of Garland Election website .
