City Holiday Hours and Services: Monday, Jan. 21
City of Garland offices,  utility customer service, tax office,  librariesrecreation centers and  senior centers will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

The recycling center, transfer station and C.M. Hinton Jr. Regional Landfill will also be closed Jan. 21.

There will be no disruption in trash or recycling collection. 

Protect Your Pipes and Plumbing in Freezing Temperatures
Frequent freezing temperatures are expected during the remainder of the month and into February.  Keeping an eye on the weather forecast and protecting your pipes can save you a lot of trouble and unnecessary costs for plumbing repairs.

When you feel that familiar chill in the air, remember to drip your faucets, open cabinets under sinks, and cover or wrap outside pipes and spigots.

This year's Sweetheart Dance is set for Saturday, Feb. 2, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center in Downtown Garland.

SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training: Feb. 16
The 2019 severe weather season is around the corner. Are you prepared to recognize clues that suggest large hail, flash flooding or a possible tornado?

The National Weather Service will host its free SKYWARN Storm Spotter Training from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

Plan Before You Plant Workshop
Now is a great time for trimming, whether that be your calendar, waistline or trees! Good neighbors look for ways to build community as their "trimming" begins, which can include starting a walking group, coordinating tree trimming and more!

Gain valuable technical assistance and learn helpful tips for completing a successful matching grant project. 

The workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Main Street Municipal Building, 800 Main St.

Welcome to Garland Class
Whether you are new to Garland, or were born and raised here, this is the class to get better acquainted with what makes Garland a great place to live! Learn about the different services of City departments, how your tax payer dollars are being used and how you can get involved. Class begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at  Garland City Hall,  200 N. Fifth St.

Art Explorers: Story Quilts
In honor of African American Heritage Month, children ages 6 through 12 can create story quilts at this month's Art Explorers event,  2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the  Walnut Creek Branch Library, 3319 Edgewood Drive.

Attendees will draw their own responses to the prompt "What place would you want to visit if you could fly there?" Once their drawings are complete, the artists will add precut pieces of recycled magazines to the borders of their quilts.

The Garland City Council will hold a Bond Program Work Session at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St. View agendas  here, and be sure to click the "subscribe" button to receive notifications when meeting agendas are posted.

City Council Election Filing Deadline
Feb. 15
Interested Garland voters may file for a place on the May 4, 2019, City Officer General Election ballot for the offices of Mayor and Council Districts 3, 6, 7 and 8.  Anyone interested in candidacy must make an appointment with the City Secretary's Office to submit their application for a place on the ballot before the filing deadline of Friday, Feb. 15. Candidate packets are available online here For more information and updates, continue to watch the City of Garland Election website .
