Public Input Meeting for New Senior Activity Center

 

Share your ideas with us! The design process for the new Garland Senior Activity Center is beginning, and we want your input.

 

Tell us what you'd like to see in the new facility at a public input meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Granger Recreation Center, 1310 W. Avenue F.

State of the City Address Monday, Feb. 13


Get on Garland's inside track to start off 2023!


Don't miss this chance to get all the latest from Mayor Scott LeMay and speak directly with representatives of City departments, including public safety, utilities, neighborhood services and many others.


The open house with City departments will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. The Mayor's address will begin at 6:30 p.m.


Video presentation of the address will be available online at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at GarlandTX.gov.

February Is Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month


February is Black History Month, a time to remember the important people, events and contributions of Black history in the United States.


During February the City will celebrate with a variety of events such as lectures, movies and exhibits that recognize the history of Black Americans.

Black History Month Movie: "Selma" Wednesday, Feb. 1


The City of Garland Cultural Arts Department presents a free showing of the 2014 film "Selma" (rated PG-13) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.


The film features a chronicle of Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign to secure equal voting rights through an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965.


Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking for all Plaza Theatre events is available at the Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Black History Month Lecture at the Library Thursday, Feb. 9


Patrons of all ages can learn about Black history in Garland at a special presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the North Garland Branch Library, 3845 N. Garland Ave.


Ricky McNeal, President of Garland’s NAACP Unit 6256, will present “Anti-Black Violence and Resistance in the Diaspora.” McNeal will describe the obstacles and barriers related to housing, education, employment and community issues that African Americans had to overcome when they migrated to Garland.

Throwback Thursday Movie Series: "10 Things I Hate About You" Thursday, Feb. 2


The Downtown Garland Business

Association presents a free screening of "10 Things I Hate About You" (rated PG-13) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.


Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in this modernized William Shakespeare comedy.


Dress in a movie-themed costume for a chance to win Downtown Dollars! Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking for all Plaza Theatre events is available at the Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Sweetheart Dance Friday, Feb. 3


Dads, granddads and uncles, experience a magical evening with your little sweetheart at this year's Sweetheart Dance, Friday, Feb. 3, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. 

 

The evening includes dinner, dancing, a professional 5x7 photo, and each little girl will receive a special gift.

 

Ages 3 to 7 dance from 6 to 8 p.m. Ages 8 to 15 dance from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. If you have a sweetheart in each age category, you may attend the dance of your choice.

The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

Friday, Feb. 17, is the last day candidates may file for a place on the ballot for the May 6 City of Garland General Election for Mayor and City Council Districts 3, 6, 7 and 8. Learn more at GarlandTX.gov.


Flu Shots and Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Available at Garland Public Health Clinic

This year's flu vaccine and the bivalent COVID-19 booster are available at the Garland Public Health Clinic. Flu shots are available for adults, children and seniors who are insured. Low-cost flu vaccines for uninsured children and adults are also available. It is recommended that individuals wait at least two months after completion of the primary COVID vaccination series or their most recent booster.
