July Is Park and Recreation Month
Garland celebrates National Park and Recreation Month this July!

The Parks and Recreation facilities run by the City of Garland offer ample opportunities for residents to get out and play.

Join the fun at 9 p.m. this Saturday, July 13, for a screening of Space Jam at Central Park, 1310 W. Avenue F.

Firewheel Golf Park to Host 2019 Energy Producers, Inc. Texas Women's Open
From July 7 to 9, golfers from Texas and around the world will compete at Firewheel's Bridges Course in the 2019 Energy Producers, Inc. Texas Women's Open
 
In this championship event, 144 professional and amateur golfers will play for a $50,000 projected purse and a Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour exemption.
 
Firewheel Golf Park welcomes golf enthusiasts to walk the course with the players, set up chairs along the course, or watch the action from the Branding Iron Restaurant. Spectator admission is free.  For more information, call 972-205-3955 or email  DKennedy@GarlandTX.gov .
Participate in Garland's Community Upcycling Sculpture Garden Friday, July 12
Come Make Your Mark on Downtown's first Community Upcycling Sculpture Garden during the Sounds of Summer concert series finale!
 
Stop by 506 Art on the Downtown Square beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 12. The fun will continue until 9 p.m.
 
You will add an accent color to a plastic bottle that is painted one of five vibrant colors. Local artists will take your bottle and use it to create a sculpture! Learn more.
Summer Concert Series Concludes Friday, July 12
Bring the entire family and spend a summer evening under the beautiful Texas stars in the historic Downtown Garland Square!
 
Enjoy live music beginning at 7 p.m. and fireworks to end the event at approximately 9:15 p.m. Bring blankets, chairs, water/soda, snacks, bug spray and sunblock. Also bring some cash for the vendors! The event is free.

The City of Garland Is Seeking Crossing Guards for the 2019-20 School Year
Join the City of Garland team with a rewarding opportunity!
 
The City will host a hiring event Friday, July 19, at Holford Recreation Center, 2314 Homestead Place. There will be an informational session from 1 to 1:30 p.m. followed by on-site interviews from 1:45 to 4 p.m.
 
Participants are required to apply online for the positions and attend the informational session prior to the on-site interviews. Learn more.
A Community Conversation Saturday, July 20
The Community Multicultural Commission invites you to A Community Conversation 
from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 20, at Gale Fields Recreation Center, 1701 Dairy Road. 
 
Topics will include the 2020 census, building permit process, code enforcement frequently identified issues, Literacy for Life, and safety.

Fight the Bite
The Garland Health Department reminds residents to protect themselves against mosquito-borne illnesses by limiting outdoor activity during evening and early morning hours and wearing light-colored, long-sleeve clothing while outdoors. 
Remember also to eliminate any standing water on your property as this is where mosquitoes lay eggs.

While there have been no West Nile Virus (WNV) human cases reported in Garland in 2019, there have been confirmed cases of WNV in mosquitoes collected in the city. You can l earn about mosquito surveillance as well as view a map of mosquito trapping and spraying activity at GarlandTX.gov .
Extreme Heat Safety Tips
One of the most deadly weather phenomena to hit our region each summer is heat. In contrast to the visible, destructive and violent nature of thunderstorms, tornadoes and floods, heat is a silent killer.

Plan Commission
July 8
The Garland Plan Commission meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St. View agendas at GarlandTX.gov, and be sure to click the "subscribe" button to receive notifications when meeting agendas are posted.

Dallas County Elections and Voting Issues Public Meetings
July 9 and 10
Dallas County is preparing to transition from precinct-based polling locations  to countywide polling locations, or Vote Centers. These centers would allow Dallas County voters to cast their ballots on Election Day at any vote center in the county, regardless of their residential address. Residents can learn more about this transition at two public meetings. The first meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, in the Allen Clemson Courtroom at the Dallas County Administration Building, 411 Elm St. in Dallas. The second will occur from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Addison Conference Center, 15650 Addison Road in Addison.  Dallas County residents also can obtain more information about Vote Centers and provide their feedback at DallasCountyVotes.org.

Road Closures Around Garland
Garland Road at Shiloh Road will be under construction from 7 p.m. Friday, July 12, through 7 a.m. Monday, July 15, weather permitting. A minimum of one lane of Garland Road will remain open in each direction during these times. Holford Road bridge is closed completely for bridge work and is expected to reopen by Monday, July 15, weather permitting.  Learn more .
