Garland Is Tops in Texas Among Best Cities for First-Time Homebuyers
Garland is ranked No. 1 in Texas and No. 8 in the country on a recently released 2020 list of Best Cities for First-Time Homebuyers.

The study from personal finance website SmartAsset compared 185 cities using 12 metrics, including five-year home value appreciation, effective property tax rate, average commute time and violent crime rate.

Garland scored 91.64 of the study’s possible 100 points in the employment category, ranking third overall and best in Texas. Learn more.
Election Day Is Tuesday, Nov. 3
Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters will go to the polls for City elections, as well as federal, state, county and school district elections.

Also on the ballot is a proposal to utilize park land adjacent to Hollabaugh Recreation Center, 3925 W. Walnut St., as the site for relocation of the Walnut Creek Branch Library.

Early voting is currently underway and continues through Friday, Oct. 30.

Garland Emergency Residential Assistance Program: In-Person Assistance Now Available
The City of Garland has partnered with Catholic Charities of Dallas Inc. to provide emergency mortgage and rental assistance to City of Garland residents impacted by COVID-19. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Catholic Charities is now offering in-person application assistance. Call 214-613-3164 to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Garland's Central Library. No walk-ins, please. Bring documents listed at GarlandTX.gov to your appointment.

Catholic Charities Inc. is processing applications on a first-come, first-served basis. While we are committed to processing as many applications as we have funding for, we do anticipate a high demand. Learn more.

Adult Immunization Clinic Friday, Oct. 23
The Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver St., will host an immunization clinic for adults from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23.

No appointment is needed; walk-ins welcome.

Flu, pneumonia and shingles vaccinations will be available.

Downtown Garland Scavenger Hunt
Learn about local history while supporting downtown Garland businesses!
Visit the Landmark Museum at Heritage Crossing, 393 N. Sixth St., to get your scavenger hunt clues, lanyard and starting pin. Head to the business you think is the correct answer. If you're right, they will give you another souvenir pin. Once you have all 10 pins, return to the museum for a goodie bag! 
Garland Neighborhood Awards Applications and Nominations Due Friday, Oct. 30
Great neighborhoods take work! The City of Garland's Office of Neighborhood Vitality is looking to recognize those who make extraordinary efforts to enhance, revitalize, or invest in their neighborhoods.
The awards include:
  • Garland Neighborhood of the Year
  • Neighborhood Publication of the Year
Garland Neighbors are also asked to nominate:
  • Who's Who in Garland Neighborhoods
  • Public Servant Award

COVID-19 Updates
The Garland Health Department has received reports of 879 active cases out of 8,053 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 67 deaths. The City will update its posted case numbers each afternoon.

The Garland Plan Commission meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m.
