Garrett County Lauded for Clean Air

The 2023 State of the Air report released by the American Lung Association bills Garrett County as one of the nation’s cleanest when it comes to ozone pollution. Garrett County was the only county in the state with an “‘A” grade for its zero days high in ozone smog, continuing for its sixth consecutive year. Read more.

Garrett County Habitat for Humanity Celebrates 40th Anniversary

At its public meeting on April 18, 2023, the Board of County Commissioners for Garrett County, Maryland presented a proclamation to Steve Bortz, Director of Garrett County Habitat for Humanity, Inc., recognizing and celebrating Habitat's 40th anniversary. Also taking part in the recognition were Habitat Board members Ron Tressler, Jessica Dijack, Robin McGill, and Tonya Sturm. Founded in 1983, Habitat's volunteers, families, and staff have worked diligently with its ongoing mission to eliminate impoverished housing and homelessness in Garrett County. Read more.

Ribbon Cutting Held for Geppert, McMullen, Paye & Getty in Oakland

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, April 28, 2023, to celebrate the opening of Geppert, McMullen, Paye & Getty's Oakland branch. Ribbon Cutting Held for Yoder's Butcher Barn in Grantsville

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday, April 29, 2023, to celebrate the opening of Yoder's Butcher Barn, 3521 Chestnut Ridge Road, Grantsville. A small, family-owned slaughterhouse and custom processing shop focused on serving Garrett County and the surrounding community, the business is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to noon. UGE Achieves Notice to Proceed Milestone for Community Solar Project in Oakland

UGE International Ltd., a commercial and community solar leader, has reached the ‘Notice to Proceed’ (NTP) milestone for a 2.7MW ground-mount community solar project in Oakland, Maryland. The Notice to Proceed milestone indicates that financing for the project has closed and all necessary permits and interconnection approvals for the project are in place. This 20-acre project to be built at Lucas Landscaping and Turf Farm will join UGE’s Low-to-Moderate Income (LMI) program, meaning that at least 30% of the energy generated by the project will be reserved for LMI households. Strengthening renewable energy equity is one of UGE’s guiding goals; the Company’s stated target is for more than 25% of the off-take from its operational portfolio to serve LMI households by 2026. Read more.

Garrett County Partnering With Comcast to Expand Broadband to More Than 300 Homes and Businesses

Governor Wes Moore announced that Maryland is awarding nearly $92 million to expand high-speed internet access to an estimated 14,500 households and businesses across the state through Connect Maryland, an initiative to close the digital divide through the Office of Statewide Broadband. Funding includes a grant award for Comcast, with additional investment from the company, to serve more than 300 new connections in Garrett County. This project area is the northeast corner of Garrett County, including portions of Pocahontas Road, Gravel Hill Road, Piney Run Road, Beall School Road, Frostburg Road, Old Frostburg Road, Blocher Road, Sam Crow Road, Green Lantern Road, Avilton Lonaconing Road (to the intersection with Green Lantern Road), Teaberry Ridge Road, Laurel Woods Drive, Pine Grove Road, Louvina Drive, Blue Lick Road, and McKenzie Road.
