Dear Gary Community School Corporation Resident,

Thank you so much for your continued support of our 4,500 students, teachers, administratiors and staff of the Gary Community School Corporation.  I am delighted to inform you that the process for the demolition of Lew Wallace High School has begun. While the removal of this former school was not an easy decision, we are confident that the demolition of a blighted, dangerous structure will make our community safer, while clearing the path to create better use of the property.

Earlier this month, a request for proposals was sent out (RFPs are located at www.Garyschools.org), and we are already starting to receive submissions from various contractors. The District is hosting a pre-walkthrough for interested parties in July, and all proposals are due by August 24, 2021. The bids will be scored and shared with DUAB (the body that works with us on overseeing the operations of the Gary Community School Corporation). Once the contract is awarded, demolition is expected to begin sometime late this Fall.

This is a long-anticipated project, and we thank you for your patience as we navigated through the process of land surveys and other procedures to obtain clearance and the proper permitting for the demolition. As we continue to move ahead, please know that this is the first of several updates that you will receive from our team. We will remain consistent, accessible and transparent in all of our actions.

As members of our school community, you deserve to know firsthand the steps of the demolition from start to finish. If you have any questions about the project and/or would like to learn more about the progress of the Gary schools, please email info@garycsc.k12.in.us.

Thank you again for your patience and your support. We will keep you informed!

Sincerely,

Dr. Paige McNulty, Manager of the Gary Community School Corporation
