County officials from across Maryland testified in support of SB 726 and HB 1187 this week, both in-person and virtually. These MACo initiative bills would restore full funding – through 30% of the existing taxes on motor fuel and vehicles – back to the local governments, who maintain most of the State’s road miles.

This funding was cut by 90% in recession-driven budget years, representing a cumulative loss of $4.5B for local roads and infrastructure since FY 2007. Now is the time to restore this funding to the historic share that served the State and locals well for decades. With federal infrastructure funds available to help smooth this transition, leaders from every corner of the State called for this reinvestment back into every Maryland community.
