Gateway Thanks Chairman John Washington For His Outstanding Years Of Service
From left: Edward Diehl, Gateway Board Secretary; John Washington; Ruby Love; Albert B. Kelly, Gateway President and CEO.

Resolutions and reports are standard parts of Gateway Board of Directors meetings run by long-time Chairman John Washington.
Standing ovations and teary eyes marked the final chapter of Washington's tenure on Thursday, January 23. Washington served as board chair since September 2005 and was a member of the board since January 1994.
Vice Chair Ruby Love will become the new Gateway board chair with Dr. Terrence Hardee moving into Love's spot.
Since September 2005, Washington has welcomed members, read the Open Public Meetings Act Statement, called on staff for roll call and recitation of the agency mission and Community Action Promise, reviewed meeting minutes, resolutions and financial reports.
And while Washington handled those tasks professionally and precisely, he also handled them rapidly.
Board Secretary Edward Diehl joked that meetings will no doubt last longer as Washington's rapid reading of calls for approvals of resolutions, etc. was renowned in his 15-year tenure as board chair.
"John Washington's 25-year tenure on the board ending and his departure will bring a transition for both the board and agency," Gateway President & CEO Albert B. Kelly, CCAP, said. Kelly added that since the board reorganized in 1994, there have been only three chairmen, Samuel H. Jones, Jr., Dr. Frank D. Brigio, M.D., and Washington.
Washington has been board chair since 2005, moving up from vice chair when Brigio died. As an elected official, he served an unexpired board term, as long as he remained in a publicly held office. Washington had served on Penns Grove Boro Council and as mayor for decades until last fall.
Kelly thanked him for his commitment, involvement, support and tireless advocacy and said he was a wealth of knowledge and a resource to the community that will be hard to replace.
Kelly presented an award to Washington commemorating his 25 years of service to the agency through board membership. Washington was given a long and hearty standing ovation from board and staff in attendance.
A times overcome with emotion, Washington said, "It's hard to say goodbye ... it has been an honor to serve on the board of the best organization in the country. I couldn't ask to work with a better group of honorable people. I will always be there to support the agency and the board.
"I offer best wishes, love and blessing to the board and staff as they continue to serve the community, something he know they will do and do well," Washington said.
Kelly reminded Washington that meetings are open to the public and that his participation at future agency events would also be welcomed.
Love thanked the board for the opportunity to serve and told Washington she applauded all that he had done and with big shoes to fill, would no doubt call on him as a resource.

Internet Essentials , a program offered by Comcast, gives income-eligible families access to the Internet for $9.95 a month with no activation fee, equipment fees or price increases.  Having the Internet enables children to do homework, type reports or do research and enables the parents to e-mail teachers as well as look for jobs, pay bills or find doctors.
Gateway Community Action Partnership is working with Comcast to inform families of the program. To be eligible, low-income applicants need to show they are participating in one or more of a dozen different federal assistance programs, including Medicaid, SNAP, and SSI. They must reside in a Comcast service area and must not have subscribed to Comcast Internet in the last 90 days or have overdue Comcast bills. Also, low-cost computers are being offered for $149.99 and free training is accessible if needed. To get more information or to sign up, visit www.internetessentials.com or call 1-855-846-8376. ...
