#1 Gay Men's Leather Group Holiday flyer.

Fraternity Gay Men’s Group Holiday Party Flyer. Saturday Night, December 14th. Single sheet, 8 1/2 by 11 inches. No place or date, presumed mid 1990s. A flyer promoting a holiday party hosted by the Fraternity. As the copy states, “come and warm your hands over a big log this coming Saturday night at the clubhouse where you can always expect at least 8 inches—and we don’t mean snow! So pack your sleigh with all your horny buddies and drop your load at the Fraternity.” The flyer features a Tom of Finland style drawing of a muscular shirtless man in a Santa hat. Despite our best efforts, we can only say that Fraternity was a gay men’s leather group based on the knowledge of the previous owner. There is a Gay Men’s Fraternity in Southern California, but we could not establish any affiliation with this group. GOOD condition. Two horizontal fold creases present. Minor wrinkling. $30.00

#2 Hip Hop, 1996 style

[Hip Hop] Various authors. Fresh! August 31, 1996. Ashley Communications. Los Angeles: 1996. Color illustrated wraps. 62 pp. Color and black and white photos throughout. Single issue of this magazine that billed itself as “number one in the world of hip hop!” The magazine debuted in 1985, then billing itself as a magazine covering rock and video. The editorial style is devoted to a younger audience, being a bit light on in depth content. This issue with pieces on Immature, Toni Braxton, Crucial Conflict, Kris Kross and others. Color pinups present. VERY GOOD condition. Minor fading, wrinkling and edgewear. $75.00

#3 Black Panther Party (w/John Huggins)

Mass Rally. Nov. 3. Black Panther Party Event Flyer. Black Panther Party, Publisher. Los Angeles: no date, perhaps 1968. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. Two small photos of Eldridge Cleaver and Huey Newton present. A flyer for a Mass Rally held by the Black Panther Party of Los Angeles at South Park on November 3, perhaps 1968. Listed among speakers are Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Shermont Banks, Margaret Wright, Paul Jacobs and John Huggins. Huggins was killed in January, 1969 by members of the US organization. His killing is most likely linked to a feud between the Black Panthers and the US organization that was planned and fomented by the FBI. FAIR condition. Paper rather fragile and brittle, with heavy chipping, tearing and loss to the upper left corner, resulting in loss of part of the word mass. Several other small chips, tears and associated creases along the edges. Heavy toning along the left edge, with otherwise general toning. Minor wrinkling. $300.00

#4 Fuck You (the Magazine)

Wieners, John; Kupferberg, Tuli; Blackburn, Paul; Berge, Carol; Mac Low, Jackson et al (authors); Sanders, Ed (editor). Fuck You/a magazine of the arts. Number 5, Volume 2. December, 1962. Ed Sanders, Publisher. New York: 1962. Side stapled mimeo style zine. 8 ½ by 11 inches. 35 leaves, printed on single sides only. One of supposedly 500 copies printed, not one of the ten limited edition copies that promised to be signed and accompanied by Ed Sanders’ sperm. Single issue of one of the most influential little magazines to come out of the mimeo revolution. Produced by author, musician and provocateur Ed Sanders, Fuck You appeared in a total of thirteen issues from 1962 to 1965. With the editorial dictum of “I’ll print anything,” Sanders pushed the boundaries of the taboo, with open discussion and ruminating on sex, drugs and anything else eliciting the clutching of pearls at the end of the 1950s. Sanders and the magazine anticipated the counterculture movement to come in the late 1960s. This issue with work by John Wieners, Paul Blackburn, Carol Berge, Jackson Mac Low and many others. GOOD condition. Offsetting, toning, discoloration and foxing along the spine, as well as some creasing. General fading to the covers, with scattered foxing and minor soiling. Light curling and creasing at the corners. $500.00

A poster issued by the organization OSPAAAL, commemorating Che Guevara. This was the third year a poster was produced to honor Che and featured a reproduction of the iconic photo of Che taken by Alberto Korda. Artist Lazaro Abreu used a traditional Andean poncho decorated with indigenous patterns, hanging from Che’s preferred weapon, a carbine M2 rifle (see Victoria and Albert Museum blog for previous information). Organization of Solidarity of the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America was a political movement and organization founded in Cuba in 1966. Its goal was to fight imperialism and help liberation movements worldwide. It created posters as part of its propaganda campaign, including them as fold outs in the organization’s journal, Tricontinental. Colors and art made the posters popular, and they were distributed internationally. VERY GOOD condition. Light fading and toning. A few tiny wrinkles and creases along the right edge. Small area of discoloration at the top right corner. $450.00

Kenny and the Kasuals With Special Guest, Toys, Dec. 25, 26 at Popsicle Toes Concert Flyer. No publisher, place or date. Presumed published in Dallas, 1978. Single sheet, 8 ½ by 11 inches. A poster promoting a show by Kenny and the Kasuals at the noted Dallas club, Popsicle Toes, opened by Wayne Morgan in 1978. Kenny and the Kasuals originated as a garage rock band in 1964, before incorporating a style that prefigured the psychedelic rock movement. The band disbanded in 1967 when Kenny Daniel was drafted. The band reunited in the late 1970s, adopting a punk rock style and touring with Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and others. This flyer dates from their punk rock days. GOOD condition. Tack holes at all corners, with tearing at the upper corners. Minor general toning. Light wrinkling. $125.00

#9 Insuring Refugees to the US (CIA association?)

Refugee Insurance Proposals relating to the Refugee Act of 1953. Archive of typed and mechanically reproduced letters. Various places and dates. Dates range from April 25, 1956 to June 27, 1956. 14 leaves, printed on single sides only. It appears most are copies of originals, but a few may be original as well. All these letters stem from a proposal letter written by Ambassador Whiting Willauer to his friend and insurance executive (from whose estate these came). Willauer mentions his troubles with some Chinese refugees he sponsored, which made him ponder the possibility for some sort of insurance for sponsors of refugees, to cover financial losses in case the refugees are not able to fulfill their obligations stipulated in the Refugee Act of 1953. The letters are between other US insurance executives, pondering options and feasibility, with the eventual conclusion that the proposal was not practical. The act itself was meant to accommodate 200,000 refugees affected by communism. The earliest letter is from US Ambassador Whiting Willauer, on “The Foreign Service of the United States of America,” letterhead, and apparently written from Honduras, where Willauer was serving at the time. Notably, Willauer, along with Claire Chennault, established the Civilian Air Transport Company in China in 1946, selling it to the CIA in 1950, although not resigning from the company until 1954. At this time he became ambassador to Honduras and worked directly with the CIA in Guatemala in support of their operation to overthrow its government led by Jacobo Arbenz Guzman (see Wikipedia for previous information-or misinformation). Willauer’s letter does bear a signature, but we have not authenticated it in any way. These are from an executive of a very large international insurance firm (name of owner and firm withheld for privacy). The owner was a highly placed executive in an insurance company and travelled throughout the world extensively. They were active in politics through donations and fundraising, and it appears their family was friendly with the Roosevelts, especially Eleanor Roosevelt. The previous owner’s work for the insurance company led them to meet with various heads of state worldwide, including US government officials. Some of the people associated with this firm were also involved in World War II activities, including financing the Flying Tigers in China, as well as work for the OSS, using knowledge gained from insurance work. While we have not found any direct connection to intelligence work by this owner, their ties to those who did are strong. GOOD+ condition. Letters mounted by metal clip in a manila folder. Some wrinkling to the letters, with a few handwritten notes to some of them. $150.00

#10 Experimentalism in Science and Math

Machle, Willard; Preston, Malcolm G.; Singer, Jr., Edgar A.; Littauer, Sebastian; Adams, John S.; Churchman, C.W.; Ackoff, R.L. (authors). Bulletin of the Institute of Experimental Method. Vol. 1, No. 5 : 6. May : October, 1947. Institute of Experimental Method, Publisher. Philadelphia: 1947. Pale yellow printed wraps, side stapled and bound with cloth tape. 56 leaves, printed on single sides only. Apparently issued for private circulation. A journal issued by the Institute of Experimental Method, an institute that failed to register when doing internet searches. But, we are also not prone to clicking beyond the first page. That said, it appears to have been a collaborative effort between philosophers, scientists and educators who believed in experimentalism. Its editors were Edgar A. Singer Jr., C.W. Churchman and R.L. Ackoff. This issue includes: “The Methodology of Toxicological Research,” by Willard Machle; “Notes on the Definition of Experiment,” by Malcolm G. Preston; “Philosophy of Experiment,” by Edgar A. Singer Jr. (reprinted from another journal); “What Should the Engineer Know,” by Sebastian Littauer; “Esthetics and Music,” by John S. Adams, Jr.; “Operational Defining,” by C.W. Churchman and R.L. Ackoff. Provenance: this came from a collection of books where some were owned by mathematician James Andrew Clarkson. GOOD condition. Some soiling and smudging to the covers. General fading. Minor edgewear. Faint foxing to the spine. Rear cover offset and toned. $200.00
