FOCUS
Gaylor is Named one of ABC's 2019 Top Performers
Read the Full News Release Here
View the Top Performers Publication Here
"ABC Top Performers are leading the way in the merit shop construction industry, where diverse participants are constantly striving to achieve the highest levels of personal and company performance in an environment of fair and open competition,"
Michael Bellaman, President and Chief Executive Officer of ABC

"These rankings will help the industry identify contractors that have achieved world-class safety performance, demonstrated their commitment to their workers and their communities, and earned recognition for project excellence and diversity."

To be eligible, Top Performers must have demonstrated world-class safety performance by implementing ABC's STEP safety management system, which makes the top-performing contractors up to 680% safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average, according to the ABC 2019 Safety Performance Report.
LIVING OUR VALUES
Gaylor Values: Reflection, Evaluation, Adjustments!

Our results should not be a surprise to us...especially our successes. Recently I was congratulating someone for a "job well done." They certainly deserved the kudos as they had gone over and above to ensure Gaylor Electric had provided the best service and quality available. There is something wonderful about giving well-earned congratulations...it just feels right. And there is satisfaction in seeing the response of the individual, their smile and obvious sense of pride in what they had done. Those situations never get old when they are earned.

Take a glance up to the title of this article and you will see three keys to consistent success: reflection, evaluation, adjustments. Building the habit of doing these three will enable us to experience more successes. Doing these when there is a perceived failure will help us eliminate what caused it. Failure only happens when it is the end point, left unevaluated.

A perceived failure can and should be the launching point to your next success. Start with reflecting on what happened, giving the time necessary to review the situation. Never be in such a hurry to move on that you doom yourself to repeating changeable mistakes. Next, do an honest evaluation of "what we did, what we could have done and what we should have done"...this takes a desire to improve and not place blame.  Then make adjustments and move forward.

Being the highest performing requires reflection, evaluation, adjustments to be made--it is part of the process to success! The more successes we have, the more opportunities to celebrate and the better we become at it! Thanks again for your efforts to be the best you can be which in turn, helps make us the highest performing national contractor of excellence.

GAYLOR ELECTRIC IN THE NEWS

Gaylor Electric is Growing in Four States

Gaylor Electric is Growing in Four States...and Training the Next Generation of Electrical Contractors
While many specialty and trade contractors are dealing with the labor shortage, our Specialty Contractor of the Year is doing something about it.

Gaylor Electric is an Indianapolis-based electrical contractor that's active in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. They booked $122.28 million in regional revenue in 2018 compared to last year's $113.17 million, but what truly sets them apart is an innovative high school they've created with a private school partner that gives students both a high school curriculum and the beginning of an electrical contracting apprenticeship.

The Gaylor Electric Crossing School of Business & Entrepreneurship is a high school satellite campus located at Gaylor's Noblesville, Ind., facility. The school has a classroom with computers for students to fulfill their academic needs as well as real-world electrical contracting work experience. Gaylor partnered with the Crossing Schools, based in South Bend, for the academic program. The school is a vocational institute that trains and teaches electrical contracting and engineering. It's geared toward at-risk teenagers and the students spend half of their day engaged in the Crossing's high-school curriculum and the other half learning the electrical trade in Gaylor's fabrication production warehouse. Upon graduation, students leave with a high school diploma (not a GED) and hands-on experience in fabrication and production. So far, the school has graduated 22 students who have started careers in the field in the ABC's electrical engineering apprentice program. Some of them are working toward their associate degree with the ABC and they get advanced placement in that program because of their work at the Gaylor Electric Crossing School. The company eventually wants to graduate 100 students a year from this program.

In 2020, Gaylor Electric will expand its footprint by opening an additional 50,000 sq-ft "Production Innovation Center," located across from the existing Gaylor Electric facility in Noblesville. The new building will host three new classrooms for The Crossing High School and a 33,000-sq-ft fabrication and engineering innovation center, employee offices, and conference rooms. Part of the planned expansion is creating more space for the school.

The adults enjoyed themselves in a game of corn hole and several games of Bingo, which both had many nice prizes. To top off the day adults and children both enjoyed the Kona Ice very much!

PROJECT DELIVERY: SAFETY
Driving Safety

It is a sad fact, but more people are killed or injured in motor vehicle accidents than in any other type of incident, both on and off the job. Gaylor Electric believes in safety and wants all their employees to protect themselves and others from becoming an accident statistic. The chart below provides an excellent checklist to adhere to.

A good driver always thinks ahead; plan your travel route a head of time so that you won't have to refer to a map while you drive. Consider such factors as weather conditions, road and traffic conditions, and how much daylight remains. It is always a best practice to schedule extra time for travel.

A good driver is always prepared for the worse, expect that the other drivers will always do the unexpected. Leave room for them to pass, change lanes, speed up, or slow down unexpectedly. Keep a safe stopping distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Anticipate that pedestrians may step into your lane and be prepared for mechanical failure. Carry emergency equipment including a flashlight, flares, a jack and a first aid kit.

A good driver obeys all traffic laws, while also remembering to buckle up every time with no exceptions. You should avoid drinking and driving as it can slow your reaction speed and create additional hazards. Follow the posted speed limit and always use turn signals. Slowdown in construction zones. Reduce your chances of being in an accident or causing an accident, drive defensively and make safe driving practices habitual.

These 'good driver points' might seem like a lot of information...but your life is worth the time and effort in making this info available.

TALENT, RETENTION & ATTRACTION: EDUCATION
Critical Thinking

Definition: Critical thinking is just deliberately and systematically processing information so that you can make better decisions and generally understand things better.

Tips:
  • Ask basic questions
  • Be aware of your mental processes: a critical thinker is aware of their cognitive biases and personal prejudices and how they influence seemingly "objective" decisions and solutions
  • Try different lines of thinking: "it's obvious that X causes Y, but can Y effect X?"
  • Evaluate the existing evidence and prior experience
  • Think for yourself: Be humble, but don't overly rely on outside sources

Pratt Paper
Wapakoneta, OH
Gaylor has just about wrapped up another Pratt Paper Mill. We have completed about 98% of an excess of 625 motors. There were multiple motors with 5 to 8 runs of 500 3 conductor VFD cable being pulled hundreds of feet and terminated at the motors and MCC.  Our instrumentation and I/O list are in the excess of 3500, we are roughly 92% complete with this task. The plant is transitioning from construction to production while we help with commissioning and troubleshooting. Our goal is to help Pratt with being able to produce paper by the end of September.

PROJECT DELIVERY: PRE-FABRICATION
Carolina Pre-Fabrication
Mooresville, NC

Gaylor Pre-Fab in Mooresville, NC is currently working on a solar panel for NHA. Bottom left picture shows the solar panel that charges all the fuel pumps for the job site. Instead of buying a new battery every week, the solar panel charges just one battery and works for an extended amount of time.

Bottom right picture shows Brandon Wong putting up a cantilever rack. This rack will hold metal material and unistrut. As the prefab department grows and constructs pre-fab for more jobs, more space is needed for material. These racks will help improve space and organization for the team.
