Hello, Mid-Valley-
Happy New Year! We at the Hub recently took the opportunity to gather as a team to reflect on the year, celebrate our successes, and set intentions for 2023. As we look back on what we’ve accomplished, we are so grateful for the role each of you have played to advance our mission to elevate and enhance STE(A)M and CTE in our region to build a culture of equitable prosperity.
2022 has been a tremendous year of growth; thank you for your partnership to help realize so many opportunities for our region. We are particularly pleased to be ending the year with the successful completion of the Oregon Community Foundation’s Oracle STEM Education Grants Ignite capacity-building campaign for the region. More to come on those investments in the months ahead.
In the spirit of reflection and celebration, please enjoy this year-in-review abbreviated edition of our monthly newsletter. We’ve combed through a few of our top stories from 2022 and collected them here for your reading enjoyment. We look forward to resuming this important work with you all on behalf of our communities in 2023.
Be well,
Sarah Whiteside
Executive Director

Above:
Watch this short highlight reel of last summer's Maker Camp. Students were able to use various tools, cardboard, and 3D printers to design and construct imaginative mini-golf courses!
Right:
The Take Apart Camp was a weeklong experience where students got to explore many different tech and mechanical items by taking them apart and then putting them back together again.

STEM for All - August 2022
Our Program Coordinator, Chris Singer, travels to the far reaches of our region to bring exciting STEM educational experiences to the students in our communities. Visiting classrooms with coding, math, and circuit-building tools in hand, Chris leaves a lasting impact on the classrooms he visits about how STEM learning is not only fun and exciting but attainable to all students.
Recently, Chris brought Makey Makey kits and pizza to Santiam Canyon’s Social-Emotional class, taught by Hannah Baker. The students got a chance to learn about coding and circuit-building using pizza as a primary teaching tool.

New Makerspace at APL! - May 2022
We are proud to announce the opening of the new makerspace at the Albany Public Library (APL)! Forrest Johnson, our Makerspace & Lending Librarian, teamed up with April Spisak, Children's Librarian to coordinate, plan, and outfit the space. The Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub contributed $14,000 to outfit the space, featuring a 3D printer, sewing machines, and a variety of other materials for young makers! In addition to the makerspace, we provided nearly $6,000 in STEM-themed kits to be used in the space.

Educator Externships with GAPS - July 2022
Twelve K-12 educators from Linn and Benton Counties participated in a two-day GAPS Educator Externship on June 22 and 23.
(This was a pilot program made available through a Youth Development Oregon grant.) The industry hosts were Knife River Training Center, Valliscor, Albany Public Works Water Reclamation, Concept Systems, and Lazarus 3D. Including a tour, each host shared
a company overview, workforce trends,
in-demand skills, and the education/training/credentialing paths to employment. Staff shared about their role, career path and things that they think are important for students to know to prepare them for employment. Each day concluded with a facilitated debrief and discussion on how to integrate what the educators learned into individual classes and across the K-12 system.
