Since 2010, the World Bank's Women, Business and the Law (WBL) project has been providing data on laws affecting women in 190 economies. For its latest 2024 edition, WBL developed a standalone indicator on women's safety that can guide legal and policy reform efforts to address gender based violence. Will these guidelines make a difference?

Ensuring women's safety: data insights on gender-based violence legislation and policies

Laws and policies are essential to address violence against women. Global data from Women, Business and the Law reveal that comprehensive laws on child marriage, sexual harassment, domestic violence and femicide are lacking in more than 90 percent of economies. Even when laws addressing violence against women are in place, they may not be supported by policies to implement them.
